If your dishwasher stops mid-cycle and flashes an “i20” error code, it’s letting you know there’s a problem with the drain. Specifically, this message could mean there’s slow or incomplete draining. Let’s find out more about it and how to make it disappear!

What is the i20 error code?

On dishwashers with electronic control boards, error codes starting with “i” signify an input fault. The i20 code specifically indicates a problem with drain performance.

This error message pops up when the dishwasher fails to completely drain and lower the water level within the expected time. The control board, which monitors the duration between cycles, will throw an i20 code if it takes too long to empty the wash tub.

Causes of i20 errors

Some of the most common issues that can disrupt normal draining and lead to i20 error codes include:

Clogged or blocked drain lines

If there are any obstructions anywhere along the drain path—from internal hoses to under-sink pipes—they can slow or prevent water from being removed from the tub. Food debris is the most common source of drain line clogs.

Drain pump failure

If the drain pump malfunctions or fails to activate, water won’t empty from the tub correctly. Motors or impellers clogged by debris are some common causes of pump failures.

Power supply issues

Like other electrical faults, low voltage or voltage drops could affect the normal operation of the drain pump and throw error codes.

Incorrect drain hose setup

If the drain hose was installed in a way that crimps hoses, lacks proper high loops, or disconnects from the garbage disposer, those issues can impede drainage and potentially trigger i20 codes.

Loose electrical connections

Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring between the control board and drain pump solenoid can cause intermittent electrical failures that disrupt pumping operations.

Bad control board

This is the least likely culprit, but a malfunctioning control board can misread water levels or times, causing false i20 errors.

How to troubleshoot the i20 error code

Now that we have a better understanding of i20 drainage errors, let’s walk through these steps  to diagnose and repair your dishwasher:

1. Clean out the filters

  1. Remove and thoroughly clean the coarse and fine filters
  2. Check below and around the bottom spray arm for any food debris or hard water buildup.
  3. Reinstall the filters once they’re fully cleaned.
  4. Check that the filters are properly seated in place. If they’re not,  that can cause draining problems.

2. Verify the drain hose setup

The drain hose runs from the dishwasher pump, up through the cabinet and connects to the kitchen sink drain pipe. Check that:

  • The drain hose isn’t kinked, pinched, or bent sharply
  • Hose clamps are tight with no leaks
  • The hose is routed according to  the manufacturer’s instructions
  • No obstructions are blocking the drain hose
  • The drain hose is free from food debris or buildup

3. Test the drain pump

  1. Refer to your owner’s manual for how to enter the diagnostic mode on the dishwasher control panel. Entering diagnostics lets you manually activate components to test their functions.
  2. Turn on the drain pump and make sure:
  • You hear the pump motor humming and feel the vibration
  • Water is actively flowing out of the drain hose.

You can isolate pump issues by hooking up the drain hose externally while testing. If it drains fine while pumping out externally, that means there’s an internal pump failure.

If the drain pump doesn’t activate or only moves a little water, it likely needs to be serviced or replaced.

4. Clear clogs

If you find a clog or blockage in the drain hoses, sink drain lines, or internal pump, make sure you clear the debris before proceeding.

Small obstructions can slow drainage just enough to cause an i20 error.

5. Check electrical connections

Faulty wiring can cause intermittent electrical issues that may delay or disrupt drainage. Here’s how to check the wiring:

  1. Unplug the dishwasher
  2. Remove the junction box cover and access panel.
  3. Inspect the wiring connections between the control board and the drain pump. Look for:
  • Loose or corroded terminals
  • Damaged wire insulation
  • Moisture incursion on connections
  • Dislodged connectors

4. Clean and tighten any questionable connections.

6. Inspect plumbing components

Check for plumbing problems by:

  • Removing the knockout plug on the garbage disposal if it’s connected through it
  • Examining the drain pump impeller and housing for obstructions
  • Ensuring that no sharp bends or crimps are impeding the flow

7. Replace the drain pump

If you’ve checked connections, installed the hoses properly, and cleared clogs and the drain pump still isn’t functioning, you’ll likely need a replacement.

Installing a brand new drain pump assembly will often fix persistent i20 errors related to drainage problems.

8. Re-test after repair

After completing any repairs, test the dishwasher’s operation by:

  • Running a short diagnostic or wash cycle
  • Confirming the water drains fully without any i20 errors
  • Verifying that no new error codes appear

The dishwasher should now drain without issues and clear the original i20 code. Consider running a second wash cycle to make sure everything is working correctly.

How to prevent i20 drain errors

Catching drainage problems quickly helps to prevent odor issues and leaks resulting from backflow. Here are some tips:

  • Regularly clean filters and spray arms
  • Inspect and clean the drain pump screen
  • Use a drain cleaner monthly to keep lines clear
  • Avoid overloading the dishwasher with large or bulky items
  • Make sure all hoses are correctly installed
  • Quickly address any plumbing issues you find under the sink
