Is your KitchenAid stand mixer struggling with decreased power or strange noises? It might be time to replace the motor brushes. With our step-by-step guide and an easy-to-follow video tutorial just below, you’ll have your beloved kitchen helper back in prime condition in no time!
In a KitchenAid stand mixer, the motor brushes conduct electrical current to the motor. They’re keyed, which means they’re designed to fit into the mixer in a specific way. Over time, regular friction and wear can cause the motor brushes to become damaged.
Common signs that the motor brushes need to be replaced include decreased power or speed, intermittent operation, or unusual noises coming from the motor.
Though motor brushes are sold individually, it’s recommended to replace both brushes at the same time even if only one appears to be worn out. By replacing the brushes, you can improve the motor’s operation and extend the life of your stand mixer.
With a few basic tools and some patience, you can tackle this repair yourself and get your mixer back in working order. Let’s get started!

Safety precautions
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.

How to replace the motor brushes
Follow these steps to swap out the motor brushes in your KitchenAid stand mixer:
- Unplug the mixer from the electrical outlet to prevent any accidental starts or electrical shocks.
- Lift the beater slightly, then turn it clockwise (while you’re looking down on it) until it disengages. Lift it out of the mixer.
- Lift the bowl straight up and out of its base. Set both the beater and bowl aside.
- Find the brush caps on the sides of the mixer – one on the left and one on the right.
- Gently insert a flat-head screwdriver into the slot of the brush cap. Carefully press and turn the screwdriver to loosen the cap without stripping it.
- Carefully remove the cap and set it aside.
- The brushes are spring-loaded but won’t eject forcefully. Pull the old motor brush out of the holder. Repeat this process on the other side.
- Align the flat side of the new brush to the upper left corner of the left-side brush holder inside the mixer. Then align the flat side of the brush to the lower right corner of the right-side brush holder. Carefully insert the new brush into the holder.
- Place the cap back over the brush holder.
- Start threading the cap by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the cap with the screwdriver until it’s snug. Avoid overtightening it, which can strip the cap.
- Align the pins of the bowl with the receiving holes in the base of the mixer. Lower the bowl into position and secure it.
- Line up the shaft of the beater with the hub and make sure the locking pin aligns with the slot. Lift and lock the beater into place.
- Plug the mixer back into the electrical outlet.
- Test the mixer to make sure the mixer works correctly.
