The dual infinite switch on your Samsung range controls the heat output of the dual element, which allows you to adjust the temperature based on what you’re cooking. If the dual infinite switch is faulty, it could prevent the dual element from working.

If you’re having trouble with the dual infinite switch on your electric Samsung range, you’ll be happy to know that you can test it and — if needed — replace it in just a few steps.

If you need any other replacement parts for your Samsung range, you can enter your model number at AppliancePartsPros.com to order them. Most orders arrive in just two business days, and we have thousands of free guides to show you how to install your new parts.

Important: The part replacement information provided in this article is based on model FTQ387LWGX and may not apply to your specific appliance model. Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to test the dual infinite switch

Find out if the dual infinite switch on your electric Samsung range needs to be replaced by following these steps.

LIVE VOLTAGE WARNING: For these tests, the range needs to be plugged in and powered on. Please be very careful to protect yourself from electric shock, which has the potential to cause serious injuries. Don’t ever test live voltage if you’re uncomfortable using a multimeter.

Step 1: Check the voltage coming into the infinite switch

  1. Disconnect the range from the power outlet.
  2. Remove the screws on the rear panel on the back of the control panel and lift the panel off.
  3. Plug the range back in.
  4. Set your multimeter to Volts AC mode.
  5. Place one meter lead on the P1 terminal (double red wire) and the other lead on the P2 terminal (double black wire).
  6. Check the meter reading. You should get a reading of 240 VAC.

Step 2: Test the inner element switch

  1. Make sure the range is plugged into the power outlet.
  2. Set the infinite switch for the inner element to come on.
  3. Set a multimeter to Volts AC mode.
  4. Use the meter leads to test from terminal 4 (yellow and violet with gray wire) to terminal 2 (blue wire).
  5. Check the meter reading. You should get 240 VAC.

Step 3: Test the inner and outer element switch

  1. Make sure the range is plugged in.
  2. Set the infinite switch for the inner and outer burner to come on.
  3. Set your multimeter to Volts AC mode.
  4. Place one meter lead on terminal 4a (violet wire) and the other on terminal 2 (blue wire).
  5. Check the meter reading. You should get 240 Vac.

If you get proper voltage at each terminal, then the infinite switch is good.

If there’s not proper power at any of the terminal connections, then the infinite switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.

How to replace the dual infinite switch (if needed)

If your Samsung range has a bad infinite switch, follow these steps to replace it yourself.

  1. Make sure the range is unplugged from the power supply.
  2. Remove the rear panel and screws.
  3. Disconnect the wiring from the faulty dual infinite switch.
  4. Pull off the knob.
  5. Remove the 2 screws that hold the switch in place.
  6. Put the new dual infinite switch in place and secure it with the 2 screws.
  7. Place the knob back on.
  8. Reconnect the wiring to the new switch.
  9. Put the rear panel back on and secure it with the screws.
  10. Plug the unit back in or turn the circuit breaker back on.
  11. Test the range to make sure the new dual infinite switch is working correctly.
