What you need

  • Multimeter
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver

The specific tools required may vary depending on the model of your appliance and the type of fasteners used on it.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the appliance or its parts. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Shut off the gas supply to prevent any gas leaks while you work.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

How to test and replace the Samsung range’s high limit thermostat

Below are the steps to test and replace the high-limit thermostat in a Samsung range. This component may need replacement if the oven is not heating in bake or broil mode, especially after a self-clean cycle.

Step 1. Test the high-limit thermostat

  1. Disconnect power by unplugging the power cord or turning off the circuit breaker.
  2. Pull the range away from the wall to access the back panel.
  3. Remove the Phillips head screws securing the back panel and set the panel aside.
  4. Locate the main control board and find the CN101 connector.
  5. Remove the CN101 connector carefully.
  6. Set the multimeter to continuity mode.
  7. Test for continuity from L1 at the main terminal block to the black wire connector that was removed.
  8. If continuity is present, the thermostat is functioning correctly. If no continuity is detected, the thermostat is open and needs replacement.

Step 2. Remove the high-limit thermostat

  1. Turn off the power to the range or unplug it before proceeding with the replacement.
  2. Open the oven door and remove the four Phillips head screws underneath the control panel.
  3. Lay the control panel flat; it is held in position by multiple connectors.
  4. Remove the two black screws that secure the cooktop.
  5. Carefully lift the front of the cooktop and place two 2×4 supports underneath to hold it in an elevated position.
  6. Locate the high-limit thermostat.
  7. Remove the single screw securing the thermostat.
  8. Disconnect the wires attached to the thermostat.

Step 3. Install the new high-limit thermostat

  1. If a replacement thermostat is available, proceed with installation. Otherwise, obtain a new thermostat from an appliance parts retailer.
  2. Position the new thermostat in place and secure it with a single screw.
  3. Reconnect the wires to the new thermostat.
  4. Carefully remove the 2×4 supports and lower the cooktop back into position.
  5. Reinstall the two black screws to secure the top.
  6. Reposition the control panel and reinstall the four Phillips head screws.
  7. Restore power to the range to complete the process.
