What the error code means

This error code indicates that the refrigerator’s control system is not receiving the expected input signal from the dispenser control panel keypad due to a stuck key from debris or damage.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time for any heating parts to cool down before working on it.
  • Take pictures or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting to prevent any problems with reassembly.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs to any appliance parts that hold water. Have towels ready for any residual water in the system when removing parts.

Troubleshooting steps

Check the dispenser keypad and buttons

  1. Visually inspect the dispenser board for any keys or buttons that appear to be stuck or not moving freely.
  2. Gently press each key or button on the dispenser board to ensure they are functioning properly. The keys should have a smooth, responsive action when pressed.
  3. If you identify a key that appears to be stuck or not moving freely, use a non-metallic tool, such as a plastic pry tool or a toothpick, to carefully pry up the stuck key and clean any debris causing the button to stay pressed.
  4. If any of the keys are damaged, you may need to replace the entire dispenser board.
  5. Inspect the wiring connections to the dispenser board. Ensure all the connectors are securely plugged in and that there are no signs of damage, such as frayed or loose wires.
  6. If the wiring appears to be in good condition, use a multimeter to check for continuity between the dispenser board and the main control board. This will help determine if there is an issue with the communication between the two boards.
  7. If the buttons, wiring and connections all check out, but the issue with the stuck key persists, the dispenser board itself may be faulty and will need to be replaced.

Replace the dispenser control board keypad

  1. Unplug the refrigerator from the outlet.
  2. Pull the bottom of the display assembly out, then lower the display assembly from the dispenser recess.
  3. Disconnect the left side wire harnesses and lift and pivot open the metal shield.
  4. Disconnect the speaker wire, two upper sensors, and the lower harnesses.
  5. Disconnect the shield wire from the metal shield.
  6. Remove the six T-15 Torx screws that attach the display board to the display cover bracket.
  7. Connect the wiring to the new control board and reconnect to the dispenser door.
