Disclaimer: The error code information provided in this article is based on general service manuals and may not apply to your specific appliance model. While we strive to offer helpful advice for DIY appliance repairs, variations in models and configurations can lead to differences in troubleshooting steps, error codes and part replacements. For the most accurate guidance, we strongly recommend consulting the technical sheet for your specific appliance model.

Common causes of SUD errors

Excessive detergent

Using too much detergent can lead to excessive suds in your washer. Front-loading washers require HE detergent, which is formulated to produce fewer suds. If you use too much, the washer can create excessive foam and trigger the SUD error.

Wrong type of detergent

Using the wrong type of detergent, such as regular detergent instead of HE detergent, can also cause excessive suds. HE detergents are specifically designed for high-efficiency washers and produce less foam. Avoid using regular detergent in front-loading washers.

Incorrect usage of additives or fabric softeners

Using too many additives (like fabric softeners or boosters) or pouring them directly onto the clothes instead of the designated dispenser can cause suds to build up in the machine.

Clogged drain hose or pump

A clogged or partially blocked drain hose or pump can hinder water drainage from the washer. When water can’t drain well enough, it can lead to excessive foam and trigger the SUD error.

Bad pressure switch

The pressure switch detects the water level in the washer. If the pressure switch is faulty, it may not accurately detect the water level, which can cause the tub to underfill and create excessive suds.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

How to resolve the SUD errors

  1. See if there are a lot of suds. If there are, try to use vinegar to eliminate them. If there are no suds, turn the washer off and unplug it from the power supply.
  2. Turn off the water supply to the washer.
  3. Check the washer’s manual and your detergent container to make sure you’re using the appropriate amount of detergent for your specific washer and load size.
  4. Inspect the drain hose for any clogs, kinks, or obstructions that may be preventing water from draining.
  5. Remove the drain hose from the back of the washer and drain pipe. Remove any debris or blockages from the hose and reconnect it.
  6. Check the drain pump at the bottom front of the washer for any debris or blockages. Check the filter and clean it if necessary.
  7. Check for any visible damage or loose connections on the pressure switch and hose.

If you find any damaged parts, replace them before using your washer.

Once you’ve cleaned and made replacements, close the washer door and restart the washing cycle.
