Got a leaky garbage disposal? Swapping out the mounting assembly might just fix the problem. Whether you’re hooking up a new unit or the old mount isn’t working anymore, we’re here with a simple DIY guide to get your sink back in action.
This info might not match your exact appliance model. We try to give helpful tips for all sorts of DIY appliance repairs, but different models can have their quirks—like unique troubleshooting steps or parts. For the best advice, check your appliance’s manual or reach out to us if you’ve got questions.
Getting ready and staying safe
Before you jump in, let’s make sure you’re prepped and safe. Here’s what to do:
- Always turn off the power by unplugging the appliance or switching off the circuit breaker before starting. This protects you from the risk of electric shock.
- Wear insulated gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges, pinching hazards, or debris.
- Take your time and work at a steady pace to avoid accidents or injuries.
- Make sure your workspace is well-lit so you can clearly see and access the parts you’re working on.
- Keep your area organized and free of clutter, and ensure children and pets are kept away from the workspace.
- Never handle internal parts with wet hands. Make sure both your hands and the work area are completely dry.
- Check your appliance’s user manual for specific instructions or safety guidelines related to your repair.
- Handle parts gently to prevent damaging the appliance or injuring yourself by using too much force.
- Wear safety glasses if you’re dealing with chemicals, dust, or large debris to protect your eyes.
- If the appliance was recently used, give it time to cool down before working on any heated components.
- Take photos or notes of wiring connections before disconnecting anything. This makes reassembly much easier.
- Avoid touching exposed wires or terminals. If you need to handle wires, use non-conductive tools or wear insulated gloves to reduce the risk of electrical shock.
Removing the old mounting assembly
Step 1: Unhook the old disposal
- Place something sturdy like a paint can under the disposal to support it.
- Disconnect the drain pipe and, if it’s there, the dishwasher inlet hose from the disposal.
- Loosen the mounting bolts or twist the mounting ring connecting the disposal to the mount.
- Carefully lower the disposal unit and set it aside.
Step 2: Take off the mounting ring
- Use a flathead screwdriver to pop off the snap ring.
- Stick the screwdriver between the ring and the sink flange where the ring has a gap.
- Gently work it around until the snap ring comes off.
Step 3: Remove the old sink flange
- Push the sink flange up through the drain opening in the sink.
- Scrape off any old plumber’s putty or sealant from the sink surface.
Installing the new mounting assembly
Step 1: Clean up
- Wipe down the sink drain opening with a clean cloth.
- Get rid of any leftover debris or putty bits.
Step 2: Put on new plumber’s putty
- Roll a handful of plumber’s putty into a rope about half an inch thick.
- Place the putty around the underside of the new sink flange.
Step 3: Fit the new sink flange
- Press the sink flange firmly into the drain opening.
- Make sure it’s centered and sitting evenly.
- Wipe away any extra putty that oozes out.
Step 4: Put together the mounting ring
- From underneath, slide the gasket onto the bottom of the sink flange.
- Follow that with the backup flange and the upper mounting bracket.
- Attach the snap ring by spreading it and fitting it into the groove on the sink flange.
- Tighten the mounting screws evenly until it’s all snug.
Step 5: Mount the new disposal
- Line up the three mounting tabs on the disposal with the mounting ring.
- Twist the mounting ring until the tabs lock into place.
- Make sure the disposal’s outlet lines up with the drain pipe connection.
Wrapping up and testing
Step 1: Hook up the wiring
- Open up the wiring compartment on the disposal.
- Use the wiring diagram in your manual to connect the wires.
- Secure the connections with wire nuts and put the cover plate back on.
Step 2: Connect the drain pipe
- Reconnect the discharge tube to the disposal’s outlet.
- Attach the other end to the drain pipe or P-trap.
- Tighten all the slip nuts and connections to keep leaks at bay.
- If you’ve got one, connect the dishwasher inlet hose to the disposal’s inlet port.
Step 3: Check for leaks
- Turn the water supply back on.
- Run water into the sink and look for any leaks.
- If you spot drips, tighten the connections as needed.
Step 4: Give it a test run
- Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.
- Run cold water in the sink.
- Turn on the garbage disposal for a bit.
- Listen for smooth operation—no weird noises or vibes.
