It rides in a groove on the motor pulley and loops around an idler pulley that keeps tension on it. When the motor spins, the belt turns the drum. That’s it, simple mechanical connection, no magic.

Over time, the belt dries out, cracks, stretches, and eventually snaps. It’s rubber under constant heat, so it’s really a question of when, not if. Most dryer belts last somewhere between 5 and 12 years depending on how heavily you use the machine and how hot it runs. When it goes, the drum just stops turning, even though everything else in the dryer might sound perfectly normal.

⚠️ Smell gas? Stop — get outside, then call your gas utility (or 911) from there. Full safety notes below.

Signs Your Dryer Belt Has Failed

[lwptoc numeration="none"]

The motor runs, and you can hear it, but the drum doesn’t turn

You hear a loud thumping or squealing right before the drum stops spinning

The drum spins with almost no resistance when you rotate it by hand

You find small rubber fragments inside the dryer cabinet

The dryer shuts off shortly after starting (some models have a belt switch that kills power when the belt breaks)

That last one trips people up. If your dryer starts for a second and then goes dead, you might think it’s an electrical issue. But on models with a belt switch, very common on Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kenmore dryers, a broken belt is actually the cause. We’ve written more on that specific scenario in our guide on how to replace a broken Whirlpool dryer belt switch if that matches what you’re seeing.

Tools You’ll Need

Putty knife or flathead screwdriver (for releasing top panel clips)

1/4-inch nut driver or socket

5/16-inch nut driver or socket

Phillips-head screwdriver

Replacement dryer belt (specific to your model)

Smartphone or camera (to photograph the belt routing before removing it)

When you’re ready to find the right part, grab your model number and head over to our repair help section. Dryer belts are not universal; the length, width, and number of ribs vary by model. Getting the exact match matters because a belt that’s even slightly too long won’t keep proper tension, and one that’s too short won’t fit at all.

Before You Start

Unplug the dryer. If it’s gas, also turn off the gas supply valve behind the unit. Pull the dryer away from the wall far enough that you can work comfortably behind it. If your dryer vents through a rigid duct, disconnect it from the back. This is also a great time to clean out that vent connection; lint buildup there is a fire hazard, and you’re already back there.

Step-by-Step Belt Replacement

The exact process varies slightly between brands and models, but the general approach covers the vast majority of residential dryers. Here’s what catches most people off guard: getting the cabinet open is usually the hardest part. Once you’re inside, the belt swap itself takes five minutes.

Opening the Cabinet

Slide a putty knife or thin flathead screwdriver into the seam between the top panel and the front panel, about two inches from each corner. Press in to release the spring clips, then lift the top panel and lean it back against the wall.

Disconnect the door switch wire harness; it’s usually a simple plug connector right inside the front panel.

Remove the screws securing the front panel to the cabinet. On most models, there are two screws at the top corners and sometimes two at the bottom. Support the front panel as you remove the last screw. It’s heavier than you’d expect.

Lift the front panel off and set it aside. You now have full access to the drum.

Some brands, especially Samsung and LG, require you to remove the rear panel instead. If your dryer’s front panel doesn’t have obvious mounting screws or clips, check the back. The belt routing concept is the same regardless.

Removing the Old Belt

Take a photo of how the belt routes around the motor pulley and idler pulley. Seriously, do this. The routing is the one thing that confuses people during reassembly, and a quick photo saves all the guesswork.

If the old belt is still intact, reach underneath the drum and push the idler pulley toward the motor to release tension, then slip the belt off the motor and idler pulleys.

Lift the drum slightly and slide the old belt off. If the belt snapped, you might find pieces of it sitting at the bottom of the cabinet. Pull everything out.

While the drum is accessible, take a look at the drum support rollers. These are small wheels at the back (and sometimes front) of the cabinet that the drum rides on. If they’re worn flat or don’t spin freely, now’s the time to replace them. Worn rollers put extra stress on a new belt and shorten its life.

Installing the New Belt

Drape the new belt around the drum with the ribbed side (the grooved side) facing the drum surface. The flat, smooth side faces out. This is important; if you install it backwards, the belt will slip.

Position the belt so it sits in the wear track on the drum. You’ll see a slight path or indentation where the old belt rode. Center the new one there.

Set the drum back into position on the rear support rollers (and front glides if your model has them).

Reach underneath the drum and locate the idler pulley and motor pulley. Thread the belt around the motor pulley first, then loop it around the idler pulley. The idler pulley is spring-loaded, so you’ll need to push it toward the motor to create enough slack to get the belt on, then let it pull back to take up tension.

Spin the drum by hand a full rotation. The belt should track smoothly without riding off to one side. If it slips off immediately, double-check your routing against the photo you took earlier.

Putting It Back Together

Reattach the front panel and secure the mounting screws.

Reconnect the door switch wire harness.

Lower the top panel and press down firmly at the corners until the spring clips snap back into place.

Reconnect the vent duct, push the dryer back into position, and plug it in. If it’s gas, turn the supply valve back on.

Testing the Repair

Run the dryer on a timed-dry, no-heat cycle for a couple of minutes. Listen carefully. You should hear the motor running smoothly and see the drum turning at a steady pace. No squealing, no thumping, no rubbing sounds.

Then run it on a heated cycle with a few towels inside for about ten minutes. Open the door and feel the towels; they should be noticeably warm and tumbled. If the drum turns but you’re not getting heat, that’s a separate issue from the belt and points toward the heating element, thermal fuse, or gas igniter depending on your dryer type.

If you hear a rhythmic thumping during the test run, the belt may not be seated in the drum track properly, or one of your drum rollers could be worn. Kill the power and take another look before running a full load.

Need More Help?

If the belt routing on your particular model has you scratching your head, or if the drum still won’t spin after the swap, our community forum is full of people who have been there.
