It means the switch is worn out internally and only makes contact some of the time. We\u2019ve seen plenty of these where the switch tests fine on the workbench but fails under the slight vibration of a running dryer.<\/span>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tools You\u2019ll Need<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This repair calls for almost nothing in the way of tools:<\/span>\r\n<ul><li><p>Flat-head screwdriver or putty knife<\/p><\/li><li><p>Phillips-head screwdriver<\/p><\/li><li><p>Multimeter<\/p><\/li><li><p>Small towel or magnetic parts tray for screws<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s the whole list. Some models use a quarter-inch nut driver instead of a Phillips, so having one handy doesn\u2019t hurt. The flat-head screwdriver or putty knife is for releasing the spring clips that hold the top panel down on many dryer designs.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Before you touch anything inside the dryer, unplug it from the wall.<\/strong> If the plug is difficult to reach, flip the breaker. Confirm power is off before you proceed.<\/span>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Test the Door Switch<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before pulling the switch out and ordering a new one, it\u2019s smart to test what you\u2019ve got. This takes two minutes and a multimeter.<\/span>\r\n<ol><li><p>Unplug the dryer.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Access the door switch by removing the top panel. On most dryers, you\u2019ll slide a putty knife into the seam between the top and front panels about two inches from each corner to pop the spring clips. The top panel then flips up like a car hood.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Locate the switch, it\u2019ll be mounted on the inside of the front panel near the door opening. With the switch not pressed, you should read no continuity (open circuit). Replace it.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what catches most people off guard: sometimes the switch clicks and feels fine mechanically, but the internal contacts are burned or corroded. That\u2019s why the multimeter test matters more than the click test. Trust the meter, not your ears.<\/span>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Replacing the Door Switch Step by Step<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve confirmed the switch is bad, the swap itself is straightforward. The process is similar across most major dryer brands- Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Samsung, LG, Kenmore- though the exact clip or screw arrangement varies slightly by model.<\/span>\r\n<ol><li><p>With the dryer unplugged and the top panel already raised, locate the door switch on the front panel. It\u2019s typically held in by either a mounting screw or a spring clip that snaps into a rectangular cutout.<\/p><\/li><li><p>If there\u2019s a screw, remove it with your Phillips screwdriver. If it\u2019s a snap-in style, press the retaining tab with your flat-head screwdriver and push the switch out through the front of the panel.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Disconnect the wire connector if you haven\u2019t already. Take a quick photo with your phone before disconnecting so you have a reference for the wiring orientation. On most dryers, there\u2019s only one plug, and it only fits one way, but a photo takes two seconds and can save you a headache.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Take your new switch and connect the wire harness. Make sure the connector is fully seated; push it on until it clicks.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Position the new switch into the mounting hole. If it\u2019s a snap-in, press it firmly until the retaining tab locks into place. If it\u2019s screw-mounted, line it up and thread the screw in.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Before you button everything back up, test the switch by hand. Press the actuator a few times and listen for a solid, consistent click. You should feel a firm snap, not a mushy or uneven response.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Lower the top panel back down and press firmly at the corners until the spring clips re-engage. You\u2019ll hear them pop into place.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Plug the dryer back in.<\/p><\/li><\/ol>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The whole job from start to finish usually runs about 15 to 20 minutes. The dryer should fire right up. Open the door mid-cycle; the dryer should stop immediately. Close it again and restart. That stop-and-start behavior confirms the new switch is communicating properly.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the drum light is controlled by the door switch on your model, check that too. Open the door, and the light should come on. Close it, and the light should go off.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the dryer still won\u2019t start after the switch replacement, you may be dealing with a separate issue like a failed start switch, a broken belt (some dryers have a belt-detection switch that also prevents starting), or a thermal fuse.
