But the four listed above account for the vast majority of no-spin calls we deal with. Let’s work through them.

Tools You’ll Need

Before you pull the dryer apart, gather these up:

Phillips-head screwdriver

Flathead screwdriver or putty knife

5/16-inch nut driver (used on most dryer cabinet screws)

Multimeter

Work gloves

Flashlight or headlamp

Smartphone to snap photos of wire connections before you disconnect anything

Unplug the dryer before doing any work. If it’s a gas dryer, also shut off the gas supply valve behind the unit. These are non-negotiable steps.

Diagnosing and Fixing Each Cause

The Drive Belt

This is where you start. The drive belt is a long, thin, ribbed rubber belt that wraps around the drum, loops under the idler pulley, and connects to the motor pulley. It’s what actually transfers the motor’s rotation to the drum. Over years of use, the belt stretches, cracks, frays, and eventually snaps. When it breaks, the motor will still run (you’ll hear it) but nothing spins.

Here’s how to check it:

Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall.

On most dryers, you can pop the top panel by sliding a putty knife into the seam at the front corners to release the spring clips. On some models you’ll need to remove screws at the back of the top panel instead.

Once the top is up, look down at the drum. You should see the belt wrapped around the outside of the drum barrel.

If the belt is missing, hanging loose, or sitting in a pile at the bottom of the cabinet, that’s your answer.

Replacing a dryer belt is genuinely one of the simpler appliance repairs out there. You’ll need to remove the front panel on most brands (or the rear panel on some older models), lift the drum out or tilt it up, route the new belt around the drum with the ribbed side against the metal, then loop it under the idler pulley and around the motor pulley. The trickiest part is getting the belt tension right on that idler, and even that only takes a couple of tries.

Pro Tip: While you have the drum out, inspect the idler pulley. Give it a spin. If it wobbles, grinds, or doesn’t spin freely, replace it at the same time. A seized idler pulley will chew through a new belt fast.

Drum Rollers

Most dryers use two or four drum support rollers: small wheels that the drum rides on as it turns. Over time, the rubber or plastic on these rollers wears flat, develops flat spots, or the bearings inside seize up. When that happens, the drum can’t rotate freely. You might hear a loud thumping or squealing before they fail completely, or the drum may just refuse to turn.

To inspect them:

With the dryer unplugged and the front panel or drum removed (you’ll already be here if you checked the belt), locate the rollers on the rear bulkhead. Some models also have rollers at the front.

Spin each roller by hand. They should turn freely and smoothly with no wobble.

If any roller is stiff, wobbles on its shaft, or has visible flat spots or damage, it needs to go.

Always replace drum rollers as a set. If one is worn, the others are right behind it. Mixing a fresh roller with worn ones causes uneven drum support, which leads to noise, vibration, and premature failure of the new part. For most dryers, this is a straightforward swap: the rollers pop off a shaft held by a retaining clip or tri-ring.

Drum Roller Axles

This one gets overlooked. Even if the rollers themselves look okay, the axles they ride on can wear. These are just steel shafts pressed into the dryer’s bulkhead. When the shaft wears down and loses its round profile, the roller sits crooked and doesn’t spin properly. You’ll get the same symptoms as bad rollers: thumping, binding, or a drum that won’t turn.

Check the axles while you have the rollers off:

Look at the shaft surface. It should be smooth and round.

If you can see a flat spot, groove, or any scoring, replace the axle.

Most axles pull straight out or are held by a push nut on the back side.

We see this a lot on dryers that have had one set of rollers replaced already. The homeowner swaps the rollers but doesn’t check the axles, and the new rollers wear out in a fraction of the normal lifespan.

The Drive Motor

If the belt is intact and tight, the rollers spin freely, and the drum still won’t turn, the motor itself may be the problem. A failed motor usually shows one of these signs:

Dryer is completely silent when you press start: no hum at all

Motor hums but doesn’t spin (could be a seized bearing or a bad start winding)

Motor runs for a few seconds, then cuts out on the thermal overload

A burning smell near the bottom of the cabinet

To test the motor:

Unplug the dryer.

Remove the belt from the motor pulley.

Try to spin the motor shaft by hand. It should turn freely. If it’s locked up, the motor is done.

If it spins freely, disconnect the motor wires and set your multimeter to resistance (ohms). Test across the motor terminals. You should read somewhere in the low single-digit ohms range, typically 1 to 5 ohms. An open reading (OL) means the winding is broken. A reading to ground (from either terminal to the motor housing) means an internal short. Replace it.

Motor replacement is more involved than a belt or roller swap, but it’s still within reach for a patient DIYer. The motor mounts to a bracket at the base of the cabinet with a couple of clamps or screws, and the blower wheel typically threads onto the motor shaft. You may need a blower wheel removal tool or a strong grip and some patience to get the old wheel off.

Pro Tip: If you’re replacing the motor, go ahead and put on a new belt and inspect the idler pulley while everything is apart. The labor is in the disassembly. The parts cost is minimal compared to doing it twice.

A Word on Maintenance

A dryer that gets regular maintenance will last years longer than one that doesn’t. Clean the lint screen before every load, vacuum the lint trap housing a few times a year, and make sure your vent duct isn’t clogged or crushed. A restricted vent forces the dryer to work harder and run hotter, which accelerates wear on belts, rollers, and motor bearings.

Need More Help?

If you’ve worked through these checks and still can’t pin down the problem, post your model number and symptoms on our repair forum.
