It&#8217;s a common problem that&#8217;s both frustrating and confusing. Figuring out why can get your generator humming again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep in mind, this info might not match your generator exactly. We aim to help with all sorts of DIY generator fixes, but different models can have unique steps and parts. For the best advice, it&#8217;s a good idea to check your generator&#8217;s manual or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.appliancepartspros.com\/repair-help\/\"><b>reach out to us<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> if you&#8217;ve got questions.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check your fuel: is the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">re enough fresh gas?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When your generator cranks but won&#8217;t kick in, the fuel system is usually the first suspect. Generators need plenty of fresh fuel to run properly. Gasoline can go stale over time, causing starting problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take a look inside the fuel tank to see if it&#8217;s got enough gas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the gas has been sitting there for over a month, you might want to drain it and fill up with fresh fuel.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tweak the choke lever<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The choke manages the air and fuel blend during startup. Checking that the choke lever is set correctly can make all the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Set the choke lever to the right position for a cold start (usually fully closed).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once the engine&#8217;s running and warmed up, move the choke to the open position.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Test the battery<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the battery&#8217;s weak or dead, it won&#8217;t provide enough juice to start the engine.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grab a multimeter to test the battery voltage. A fully charged battery should read about 12.6 volts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Look over the battery terminals for any corrosion. Clean them up if needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the battery&#8217;s old or isn&#8217;t holding a charge, you might need to replace it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inspect the spark plug<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A bad spark plug can keep the engine from igniting the fuel mix.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Find the spark plug wire and pull it off.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use a spark plug socket to take out the plug.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Look for wear, carbon buildup, or any damage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clean the spark plug with a wire brush or swap it out if needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Swap out a dirty air filter<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You need the right air-fuel mix for the engine to fire up. The air filter keeps dust and junk out, but it can get clogged over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Find the air filter housing, it&#8217;s usually on the side of the generator.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pop off the cover and pull out the air filter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If it&#8217;s dirty or clogged, put in a new one.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Look for blocked fuel filters<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fuel filters keep junk out of the engine, but if they get clogged, fuel can&#8217;t flow properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Find the main fuel filter, it&#8217;s typically along the fuel line.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take out the filter and check for dirt or blockages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If it&#8217;s clogged, swap it out for a new one that fits your generator.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bleed air from the fuel system<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sometimes, air gets trapped in the fuel lines, stopping fuel from getting to the engine.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Locate the bleed fitting on the secondary fuel filter or injection pump.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crack open the fitting to let the trapped air out.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use the generator&#8217;s primer bulb or a small lift pump to push fuel through until it&#8217;s all fuel with no air bubbles.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clean a clogged carburetor<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Old fuel can cause varnish to build up in the carburetor, which blocks fuel flow.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Empty out any old gas from the tank and carburetor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take off the carburetor bowl to get to the insides.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spray carb cleaner to get rid of debris and buildup.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Put the carburetor back together and fill up with fresh fuel.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check electrical connections<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Loose or corroded wires can mess up the starting circuit.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check all the wires hooked up to the starter, ignition switch, and battery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Look out for damage, frayed wires, or corrosion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tighten up any loose connections and swap out bad wires if you have to.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wrapping up<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When you need parts or maintenance supplies for your generator, swing by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.appliancepartspros.com\/\"><b>AppliancePartsPros.com<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
