Striking the bolt with a hammer can help to dislodge corrosion on the bolt, making it easier to remove. However, <b><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">if you do this, wear eye protection<\/span>. <\/b>As there could be debris.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Remove the blade.<\/b> Make note of how it was installed. You may even want to use spray paint or a paint marker to mark it so you remember how to put it back once it\u2019s time to reinstall.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inspect the blade and ensure it\u2019s clear of grass, dirt, and other debris<\/b> before sharpening it. A wire brush should be enough to get it clean, but if the grime is particularly stubborn, sandpaper should do the trick.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Sharpening A Mower Blade By Hand<\/h3>\n<p>Sharpening by hand takes longer than using a machine, but you\u2019re less likely to risk damaging the blade by oversharpening or overheating the metal.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Safety first! Wear gloves, protective eye gear, and long sleeves to shield yourself from metal shavings. You may also want to wear a face mask or respirator so that you don\u2019t breathe in any dust.<\/b><\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Clamp the blade into a vice so that it is secure. <\/b>Make sure you\u2019ve positioned it so that it is easy to work with.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sharpen the blade with a 10-inch file, holding the file at about a 45 degree angle.<\/b> Start from the inside edge of the blade and move to the outside. Do not saw back and forth. You\u2019ll want to work until you have a clean, shiny edge. Once you\u2019ve achieved this, flip the blade and repeat the process.\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Follow the angle of the blade edge.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">As mentioned, you\u2019re aiming for the thickness of a butter knife.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">If you aren\u2019t feeling the file\u2019s teeth on the blade, apply a bit more pressure.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">If applying the proper amount of pressure, this shouldn\u2019t take more than 50 strokes and take as few as 10.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Once both sides are sharpened, the blade can be reinstalled on the mower.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Sharpening A Lawnmower Blade With A Grinder<\/h3>\n<p>You can use an angle grinder fitted with a flap disc or grinding stone disc to sharpen your blade. Machine sharpening is much faster than sharpening by hand, but you do run the risk of overheating the metal.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Safety first! Grinders fling sparks and metal shavings, so wear long sleeves, gloves, and eye protection<\/b> if you plan on sharpening your mower blade this way.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Make sure your mower blade is properly and securely clamped in a vice.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>With the grinding disc perpendicular to the thin edge of the mower blade, run the grinder back and forth on the blade slowly but constantly.<\/b> You\u2019ll want to even out any nicks or rough spots.\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">As with hand sharpening, follow the angle of the edge.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Once one side is finished, flip the blade and repeat the process with the other side.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">This process goes by very quickly, so pay careful attention and stop the grinder to check your work as needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>If at any point the blade gets too hot to touch, stop.<\/b> You can quench the heat in a bucket of water. Take care, because overheating the blade can damage it or leave it brittle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Once properly sharpened and completely cool, you can reinstall the blade on your mower.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Sharpening vs Replacing Lawn Mower Blades<\/h2>\n<p>Mower blades are durable and most standard push mower blades can generally stand up to one or two sharpenings before needing to be replaced. You should be inspecting your mower\u2019s blade regularly to ensure that your equipment is safe to use and you\u2019re effectively cutting your lawn.
