The Water Inlet Valve is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It controls the flow of water into the refrigerator for the icemaker and water dispenser, ensuring a consistent supply for ice production and chilled water.

Common causes of failure include sediment buildup, electrical issues, or damage from freezing. A malfunctioning valve can disrupt the water supply, affecting both the icemaker and water dispenser functions.

Symptoms of a bad Water Inlet Valve include:

  • No water or ice production
  • Slow filling of the ice tray or water dispenser
  • Leaks or puddles around the refrigerator
  • Unusual noises when the water dispenser is activated

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Water Inlet Valve (Part Number: OEM18057873)

1 Answer

Hello Shane, thank you for contacting APP, This could be an issue with the Isolation/Inlet Valve WPW10498990, the Filter Head Assembly W11346622, or the Dual Valve WPW10312696. The videos under the Isolation and Dual valves goes over accessing those components. What you may need to do is access the dual valve , disconnect the water line coming from the filter head at the dual valve and put that water line in a glass or cup, hold or tape down the door switches, and call for water at the dispenser. If the line puts in water then your issue is likely with the Dual Valve. If it does not put in water, access the Isolation valve at the back of the unit, disconnect the water line going from it into the unit, place a cup or bowl to catch any water below the valve, and call for water at the dispenser. If this puts in water then the Filter Head Assembly needs to be replaced. If it does not put in water replace the Isolation Valve.

Deborah for Model Number MFI2269FRZ02

I recently had the water valve (W10312696) replaced and the tech left the old part inside the new part box and inside there was 2 white pieces. I was concerned, so I began searching videos to see if I could determine exactly what was this part. I encountered your video and just let me say that this vid was absolutely GREAT! He explained each step in great detail. Well, from the video, I discovered the part to be a 'COVER BOX' for the upper plug to the water valve. Well, I texted the tech that did the repair and asked him why he didn't replace it and he answered that he didn't know what I was talking about and now he has blocked me! I really need to know HOW IMPORTANT is it that this 'COVER BOX' be replaced? Thank you!!

Hello Deborah, thank you for contacting APP, The Cover Box W10118193 is there to protect the upper connector for the Water Inlet Valve WPW10312696, we would recommend that the Cover Box be put back in place as the manufacturer intended.

Messy Jessy, Check for a frozen fill tube. If the fill tube is frozen then this will be a faulty valve that is allowing water to trickle in and then freeze. Also, test to make sure that there is voltage getting to the valve when the icemaker cycles and if there is then it will be the water valve that needs replaced.

Nick, You will want to get the icemaker to cycle and test for voltage to the water valve that is behind the refrigerator wall to make sure that there is 120 vac when the icemaker calls for water. If there is but will not fill with water then check to make sure that the fill tube is not frozen and if not then replace of the water valve. If there is no power then the icemaker would be faulty and need to be replaced.

Josh, Make sure that you have a good water filter in the unit, check to make sure that water flows through the water valve. If there is water through he valve then this will be a water filter head that may be faulty.

Ron, You would take the front cover off the ice maker and use a jumper wire to T and H, the ice maker will start a cycle.

Joe for Model Number MFI2569VEM4

Hi — had a situation where I could hear the inlet valve (I think) calling for water, and for some reason it was collecting in the icemaker and leaking down thru the dispenser. Which means it ran down the front of the fridge and onto the floor. Door was open first time this happened; closed the door, it stopped and I cleaned it up. 20 minutes later I heard it again. Walked in and sure enough, same thing. Water everywhere. Shut the water valve off and drained it. I tested the inlet valve for continuity and I get a reading of 186, which seems too low to me. Is the Inlet Valve the cause here, like maybe it's not shutting off when it should? Part # W10312696, Inlet Valve

Joe, for the ice maker to call for enough water to overfill the tray into the dispenser section, the motor module 8201515 would have failed. However, if the valve activated for 15 seconds and shut off, but water leaked through the ice tray into the bin, then the tray WPW10300025 would have a crack in it.

Hello Terry, if the noise only occurs on water dispense and ice maker fill then try removing the filter and use the bypass plug instead, if the noise stops try reinserting the filter cartridge fully, if still has the same noise you will need to replace the Filter head and water tank assembly,W10502642.

Hello Curt, This unit has a service bulletin on it concerning the defrost drain "P Trap". W10619951 should be ordered and installed to prevent drainage problems. The icemaker issue can be caused by low water pressure to the valves since they contain no springs to aid in their closure, but are closed by water pressure alone. This can be a failing water shutoff valve from the home plumbing water supply or a crimped water line to the back of the refrigerator. It can also be caused by a bad water inlet valve on the unit. Either valve WPW10498990 or WPW10312696, can cause the issue and the manufacturer recommends replacing both at the same time but it is usually caused by the primary valve WPW10498990.
