This washplate sits at the bottom of the tub in top-load washers. It rotates to move clothes and water through the detergent, restoring proper wash action and cleaning performance when the original plate is cracked, stripped, or worn. What it does:

  • Mounts to the drive shaft/hub and spins to create the wash action in impeller-style top-load machines
  • Circulates water and fabrics to loosen soils and improve cleaning
  • Helps reduce tangling and promotes even garment movement during the cycle
  • Failure symptoms can include weak or no agitation, poor cleaning, unusual grinding/knocking, or a loose/rocking impeller
What's included:
  • 1 washplate
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power and turn off water supply before servicing
  • Remove the center cap and hold-down bolt; pull the old washplate straight up—if stuck, rock gently and avoid prying against the tub
  • Clear debris from the hub/splines; align and fully seat the new washplate, then reinstall the bolt and cap
  • Run a short test cycle to ensure smooth operation with no rubbing or abnormal noise

My agitator wasn't working. It spins freely. I removed washplate from shaft. The bolt was tight but the teeth inside plate and shaft aren't touching. It has a lot of play. Do you think the teeth worn off the gear case shaft spline and plate? Is there an insert inside the new washplate that mine is maybe missing? Could of broke off, maybe. The teeth on both the shaft and plate aren't big. Not sure if they wore each other down from being broke for so long. or if the new plate has a insert. Just seems like a missing piece. Hard to believe these medal teeth would wear down.

1 Answer

DJS, the wash plate would be the most likely issue as it is plastic and would not grind out the spline of the metal gearshaft.
