How to change the oil in your generator the right way

Steven E / Wednesday March 19, 2025

Making sure your generator’s in tip-top shape means it’ll be ready when you need it most. One of the key maintenance tasks is swapping out the oil on a regular basis. Fresh oil not only keeps your generator running smoothly, but it also helps it last longer—saving you time and money down the line. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to change your generator’s oil properly for better performance.

The info here might not apply exactly to your specific generator model. We aim to offer helpful advice for DIY repairs, but variations in models and setups can lead to differences in troubleshooting steps, error codes, parts, and so on. For the most accurate guidance, we highly recommend checking out the manufacturer’s documentation for your specific model or reach out to us with any questions.

When to change the oil

The oil in a generator typically needs to be changed after the first 20-50 hours of use, especially for a new generator. After that initial change, the oil should be changed every 100-150 hours of use or once a year, whichever comes first. However, if you use the generator heavily or in harsh conditions (like high heat or dusty environments), you may need to change the oil more often. Always refer to your generator’s owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s specific oil change interval and oil type.

Gather what you need

Before you get started, make sure you’ve got all the tools and materials handy:

  • New oil: Use the type specified in your generator’s owner manual.
  • Clean rag
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Oil pan or a container that can catch oil
  • New oil filter (if your generator uses one)
  • Oil filter wrench (if needed)
  • Oil funnel
  • Wrench or socket set (for the oil drain plug)

Replacement steps

Warm up the old oil

Start up your generator and let it run for about five minutes. This warms up the old oil, making it thinner and easier to drain out. Warm oil flows better, so you’ll get more of the old stuff out.

Unplug the spark plug wire (optional)

For extra safety, you might want to disconnect the spark plug wire so the generator doesn’t accidentally start while you’re working:

  1. Find the spark plug, usually accessible by removing a side panel with a Phillips head screwdriver.
  2. Grab the spark plug wire boot firmly. Give it a gentle twist to loosen it up, then pull it off. Try not to yank on the wire itself to avoid any damage.

Drain the old oil

  1. Locate the oil drain plug at the bottom of the generator’s engine. It’s typically a bolt or plug near the base of the oil reservoir.
  2. Place your oil pan underneath the drain plug to catch the draining oil.
  3. Use the right wrench or socket to carefully loosen and remove the drain plug.
  4. Let the old oil drain completely into the pan. It might take a few minutes, so hang tight.
  5. After it’s all drained, put the drain plug back on and tighten it securely. Don’t go overboard tightening it—you don’t want to strip the threads.
  6. Wipe up any spills with a clean rag to keep things tidy and safe.

Replace the oil filter (if applicable)

If your generator doesn’t have an oil filter, you can skip this step.

  1. Find the oil filter, usually near the oil fill area.
  2. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old filter. Be ready—a bit of oil might spill when you take it off.
  3. Take the new oil filter and rub a little fresh oil on the rubber gasket. This helps it seal well and makes it easier to remove next time.
  4. Screw the new filter on by hand. Turn it until it’s snug, then tighten it according to the manufacturer’s specs. Avoid overtightening—you could mess up the filter or the threads.

Add new oil

  1. Make sure the generator is on a level surface so you can get an accurate oil reading.
  2. Remove the oil filler cap.
  3. Place the oil funnel into the oil fill opening.
  4. Pour the new oil slowly into the funnel. Check your owner’s manual to know exactly how much oil your generator needs.
  5. Every so often, check the oil level using the dipstick (if your generator has one) to avoid overfilling.
  6. Once you’ve added the right amount of oil, remove the funnel and tighten the oil filler cap securely.
  7. Clean up any spills with a rag.

Reconnect the spark plug wire (if unplugged)

If you unplugged the spark plug wire earlier, you’ll need to hook it back up:

  1. Slide the spark plug wire boot back onto the spark plug tip.
  2. Press it firmly until you feel it click into place, ensuring a good connection.
  3. Put back any side panels or covers you removed, securing them with the Phillips head screwdriver.

Run the generator

After changing the oil, start up your generator and let it run for a few minutes. This helps the new oil circulate throughout the engine, making sure everything’s well-lubricated. Once you’ve run the generator and turned it off, let it sit for a few minutes. Then, double-check the oil level:

  1. Remove the oil filler cap and wipe the dipstick clean.
  2. Reinsert the dipstick all the way, then pull it out to check the oil level.
  3. If the oil level’s below where it should be, add a bit more oil as needed.

Dispose of old oil properly

Remember to get rid of the old oil responsibly. Lots of auto parts stores and service stations will take used oil for recycling. Never pour it down the drain or toss it in the trash.
