Check part compatibility
Before you replace the oven safety valve, make sure you have an OEM part that’s compatible with your specific range model. To do this, you’ll need to find the appliance model number.
The model number will say MOD or Model before the numbers and is typically found on a sticker or a metal plate in one of the following locations:
- Inside the oven door
- Behind the storage drawer
- On the back of the range
- On the control panel

Safety precautions
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Shut off the gas supply to prevent any leaks while you work.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
How to replace the oven safety valve
Follow these steps to change out a faulty oven safety valve.
- Unplug the range from the power outlet and shut off the gas supply.
- Find the oven safety valve on the back of the range.
- Hold the valve with a 3/4-inch wrench while using a 9/16-inch wrench to loosen the nut connecting the gas line to the safety valve.
- Pull the gas line out from the valve and set it aside.
- Open the oven door and remove the oven racks by pulling them out until they stop, then lift and slide them off.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the oven bottom down.
- Lift out the oven bottom to access the flame spreader.
- Use a 3/8-inch nut driver to remove the nut holding the flame spreader in place and set it aside.
- Pull the drawer away from the safety valve to get better access.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver to disconnect the wires on each side of the oven burner. Be careful not to lose the little gray shield.
- Use a 1/4-inch nut driver to remove the two screws holding the oven burner in place.
- Carefully lift the oven burner off the safety valve, taking care not to damage the igniter.
- Remove the screw holding the metal plate over the oven safety valve.
- Pull the plate and safety valve forward and lift the plate off. The safety valve can be moved out of the oven.
- Set the new safety valve in place.
- Set the plate over the safety valve and lock it into the slots.
- Use a 1/4-inch nut driver to screw the safety valve and plate in place.
- Carefully position the oven burner onto the safety valve and secure it with screws.
- Reattach the wiring to the new safety valve and make sure the terminal connections are covered.
- Reassemble the internal parts by placing the flame spreader back in place and using a 3/8-inch nut driver to secure it with the nut.
- Place the oven bottom back in position and use a flathead screwdriver to attach it with the two screws.
- Slide the oven racks back into place.
- Go back to the rear of the range and reconnect the gas line to the new safety valve.
- Make sure the gas line is positioned correctly and tighten the brass fitting by using a 3/4-inch wrench to hold the valve and a 9/16-inch wrench to tighten the nut.
- Check for any gas leaks by applying a gas leak detector or a mixture of soap and water to the connections and turning on the gas supply. If the soap and water forms bubbles, that means there’s a leak that needs to be fixed.
- If there are no leaks, plug the range cord back in.
- Turn on the range and test it for any problems.
