What is a spark switch & why would it need to be replaced?

The spark switch ignites the burners by sending a signal to the spark module, which then produces the spark needed to ignite the gas. The switch can become faulty from regular use or electrical issues or damaged from spills or cleaning agents.

Symptoms of a bad spark switch include:

  • Burners that won’t ignite
  • Continuous clicking even after the knob is turned off
  • No spark when attempting to ignite the burner
  • The cooktop doesn’t produce a flame

What you need

  • Replacement spark switch (make sure it’s compatible with your specific range model before installing)
  • 13/16-inch socket wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Two flathead screwdrivers
  • Pliers

Disclaimer: The specific tools required may vary depending on the model of your appliance and the type of fasteners used on it. Always consult the user manual or refer to any specific instructions provided by the manufacturer for the recommended tools for your appliance model.

Safety tips

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Shut off the gas supply to prevent any gas leaks while you work.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to replace the spark switch

Follow these steps to change out the spark switch in your Bosch, Thermador or Gaggenau gas range.

Step 1: Remove the cooktop

  1. Unplug the range from the power outlet.
  2. Shut off the gas supply to the range.
  3. Lift off the heavy grates from the range surface. Remove any burner caps and heads as well.
  4. Use the 13/16-inch socket wrench to remove the hex nuts holding down each burner base.
  5. With the bases detached, carefully lift them up and out from the range.
  6. Pull the entire cooktop gently forward. Don’t pull too far or over-extend any wiring connections. Take care not to scratch the cooktop surface when you’re lifting.

Step 2: Detach the control panel

  1. Open the oven door and find the screws under the front lip that hold the control panel trim. Remove them with a Phillips screwdriver.
  2. Pull off all the control knobs from the panel. Take off the front glass display if your model has one.
  3. Close the oven door again. Find and remove the screws along the back edge of the control panel.
  4. Carefully slide the panel off the range and disconnect any wiring plugs or terminals on the back side. Set it aside on a soft surface.

Step 3: Remove the old spark switch

  1. Find the switch for the burner that’s not sparking. The switches are interchangeable so position doesn’t matter.
  2. Use a flat screwdriver to pry the small metal clip from the shaft and slide it off.
  3. Use pliers to detach the push-on wire terminals from the rear of the faulty switch.
  4. Slide the old switch off the valve shaft and discard it.

Step 4: Install the new spark switch

  1. Line up the new spark switch on the valve shaft so it’s in the same orientation as the old one. Push it back until the switch clip holes align on the shaft.
  2. Reconnect the color-coded wires to the push terminals. The polarity doesn’t matter here.
  3. Remount the locking clip on the shaft to hold the new switch.

Step 5: Put the range back together

  1. Position the control panel back over the cooktop element supports.
  2. Reconnect any wiring plugs and ease the panel back into place.
  3. Replace all the control panel screws along the outer edge.
  4. Reinstall the control knobs and glass display panel if you have one.
  5. Remount the control panel trim piece with its screws along the bottom oven door lip.
  6. Gently slide the cooktop back into place. Make sure any wires or tubes don’t get pinched or snagged underneath.
  7. Replace the 4 burner bases by matching their pin positions and lowering each one onto the valves.
  8. Thread the mounting nuts back onto the valve stems and tighten with the socket wrench.
  9. Put all the burner caps, heads, and grates back into their correct positions on the range.
  10. Turn on the gas supply to the range.
  11. Plug the range back in.
  12. Test all burners to make sure they can ignite.
