Your dryer hums but the drum won’t spin. Or maybe it doesn’t make a sound at all: you press start, and nothing happens. Worse yet, it runs for a few minutes, then shuts off with a burning smell that makes your heart skip a beat. All of these point to one thing: a failing drive motor. This is one of those jobs that looks intimidating when you first pull the cabinet apart, but once you see how the motor sits in there, it clicks. What the Drive Motor Does

The drive motor is the heart of your dryer. It does double duty: it spins the drum that tumbles your clothes, and it powers the blower wheel that pushes hot air through the system and out the exhaust vent. A single motor shaft connects to both. The drum belt wraps around the drum and loops over a small pulley on the motor, while the blower wheel attaches directly to the opposite end of the shaft.

When the motor fails, everything stops. No tumbling, no airflow, no drying. Some motors fail outright, while others develop problems gradually. Either way, the dryer becomes a very expensive laundry basket until you swap it out.

Signs Your Dryer Motor Has Failed

  • The motor starts, runs briefly, then cuts out (often tripping its internal thermal overload)

A humming motor that won’t spin usually means the windings are still energized, but the motor is seized, or the start winding has failed. If you’re getting a burning smell, stop using the dryer immediately; running a failing motor generates serious heat, and you don’t want that near lint buildup.

Tools You’ll Need

Gather these before you start. Nothing exotic here:

  • 1/4-inch nut driver

  • 5/16-inch nut driver

  • Phillips-head screwdriver

  • Flathead screwdriver or putty knife

  • Multimeter

  • Needle-nose pliers

  • Your phone (for photos as you disassemble, trust us on this one)

And the most important step of all: unplug the dryer before you touch anything inside it. If it’s a gas dryer, shut off the gas supply valve as well.

Getting to the Motor

The motor sits underneath the drum, mounted to the base of the dryer on a bracket. To reach it, you’ll need to open up the cabinet and remove the drum. This sounds like a big deal, but the process is straightforward once you’ve done it once.

The exact cabinet disassembly varies a little by brand. On most Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, and Amana dryers, you’ll pop the top by sliding a putty knife into the seam at the front corners, release the clips, and swing the top up. Then the front panel comes off after disconnecting the door switch wires. On GE and Samsung models, you may enter from the back panel or front depending on the design. Take a photo of the belt routing before you remove the drum. The belt path around the idler pulley and motor pulley trips people up during reassembly more than anything else. One quick snapshot saves you twenty minutes of head-scratching later.

Step-by-Step Motor Replacement

  1. Unplug the dryer. For gas models, shut off the gas supply too.

  2. Open the cabinet. Pop the top panel, disconnect the door switch wiring harness, and remove the front panel (or rear panel on some models). Set screws aside somewhere they won’t roll away.

  3. Remove the drum belt from the motor pulley. Reach underneath the drum, release tension on the idler pulley, and slip the belt off. Now the drum lifts straight out. Set it aside on a blanket or towel so you don’t scratch your floor.

  4. Disconnect the blower wheel. On most dryers, the blower wheel threads onto the motor shaft. It’s usually reverse-threaded (clockwise to loosen). Hold the motor pulley with one hand and turn the blower wheel with the other. A pair of needle-nose pliers or a clamp on the shaft helps keep things from spinning. This is the trickiest part of the whole job; the blower wheel can be stubborn if it’s been on there for years. A shot of penetrating oil and a few minutes of patience go a long way.

  5. Unplug the motor wiring. There will be a wiring harness with two or more connectors. Note which wires go where; another spot for a quick photo.

  6. Remove the motor mounting screws or clips. Most motors are held down by two or three screws or spring clips on a bracket. Remove them and lift the old motor out.

  7. Compare the old and new motors side by side. Make sure the shaft length, pulley size, and wiring connectors match. Motors can look similar across models but differ in speed or rotation, so matching your exact model number matters here.

  8. Mount the new motor. Set it on the bracket and secure it with the mounting screws or clips. Don’t overtighten; snug is fine.

  9. Reconnect the wiring harness. Match the connectors exactly as they were on the old motor. The connectors are usually keyed so they only go one way, but double-check against your photo.

  10. Reattach the blower wheel. Thread it back onto the shaft (remember, reverse-threaded, counterclockwise to tighten on most models). Get it firm and snug. A loose blower wheel will wobble, make noise, and reduce airflow.

  11. Set the drum back in place. Rest it on the rear bearing and the front glides or rollers.

  12. Reroute the belt. The flat side of the belt wraps around the drum, then loops under the idler pulley and around the motor pulley in a zigzag pattern. This is where that photo you took pays off.

  13. Reassemble the cabinet. Reattach the front panel, reconnect the door switch wires, and lower the top panel until the clips snap. Reinstall all screws.

Testing the Repair

Before you push the dryer back into position, run a quick test. Plug it in and start a timed dry cycle. Listen for smooth, steady motor operation, no grinding, squealing, or buzzing. The drum should spin freely, and you should feel strong airflow at the exhaust vent outside your house.

Let it run for five to ten minutes. If the motor cuts out, double-check your wiring connections. An intermittent shutdown right after a motor replacement almost always comes down to a loose connector or a wiring harness that wasn’t fully seated.

If everything sounds right and the drum is spinning smoothly, you’re done. Reconnect your vent hose, push the dryer back into place, and throw in a load. You just saved yourself a service call and a couple hundred bucks in labor.
