Having issues with your washing machine lid? Does it no longer open and close smoothly or feel loose? If so, the lid hinge may need to be replaced. When a lid hinge becomes damaged or worn out, it can prevent the lid from sealing properly, causing leaks, interruptions in the wash cycle, and other operational problems.

Replacing a broken washing machine lid hinge is an easy do-it-yourself repair that can be completed in less than an hour, as long as you have the right tools and replacement part. In this DIY guide, we’ll walk through the steps for replacing a lid hinge on a Whirlpool, KitchenAid, or Maytag top-load washing machine.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs to any appliance parts that hold water. Have towels ready for any residual water in the system when removing parts.

Replacement steps

  1. Unplug the washer or turn off the circuit breaker so it’s safe to work on.
  2. Open the washer lid to access the hinge area.
  3. Use a torx 15 screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the existing lead hinge in place. One screw is located on the top of the hinge, the other on the bottom.
  4. With the small flat blade screwdriver, help pry the screws out completely once they are loosened with the torx screwdriver.
  5. Lift the left side of the washer lid up slightly to disengage the old hinge.
  6. Pull the old hinge straight out from its mounting point on the side of the washer casing.
  7. Insert the new hinge into the opening on the left side where the old one was.
  8. Align the screw holes on the hinge with the holes in the washer casing. This may require wiggling the hinge into position.
  9. Insert one of the torx 15 screws through the bottom hole to hold the hinge in place.
  10. Insert the second torx 15 screw through the top hole while loosely tightening the bottom screw.
  11. Fully tighten both screws securing the new hinge.
  12. Close the washer lid and plug the washer back in or turn the breaker back on.
  13. Run a test cycle to ensure the washer is operating properly with the new hinge installed.
