Check part compatibility

Before you replace the center shaft o-ring, make sure you have an OEM part that’s compatible with your specific mixer model. To do this, you’ll need to find the appliance model number.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.

How to replace the center shaft o-ring

Follow these steps to swap out the center shaft o-ring in your KitchenAid stand mixer.

Step 1: Remove the old center shaft o-ring

  1. Unplug the mixer from the power outlet.
  2. Remove the beater by lifting it and turning it clockwise. Set it aside once it’s out of the mixer.
  3. Remove the bowl by lifting it and pulling it out. Set it aside.
  4. Take off the trim ring that goes around the planetary. You can use a flathead screwdriver and a hammer to tap it off carefully, but be careful to avoid damaging the trim ring or the mixer. Then pull it off the mixer.
  5. Remove the groove pin that holds the planetary to the center shaft. You can use a punch and carefully tap it out gently. Once the groove pin is out, set it aside.
  6. Find the tabs where the screws are and use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the planetary down. Start on one side, then move to the other, working both sides until the planetary drops off. Then pull it straight down and remove it from the center shaft.
  7. Take off the center shaft o-ring. Use a small flat-head screwdriver to pop it out of the groove and pull it off the shaft. Once it’s removed from the shaft, pull it off the mixer.

Step 2: Install the new center shaft o-ring

  1. Carefully start inserting the new o-ring on the center shaft and push it up until it fits into its groove.
  2. Put the planetary assembly back on. Line up the hole for the groove pin with the shaft and lift it. If the gears inside the mixer are misaligned, spin the shaft to align them.
  3. If necessary, use a small Phillips screwdriver to adjust the shaft. Look through the opening and pull it down until the hole is aligned and open.
  4. Use a punch to hold the hole open and insert the groove pin. Align the groove pin and tap it in with a hammer until it’s flush.
  5. Put the trim ring back on. Lift it and make sure it’s level. If one side is higher than the other, adjust it until it’s correctly aligned. Then carefully tap the trim ring on with a rubber mallet until it’s in place.
  6. Put the bowl back on by lining up the pin holes and setting it down. Lock it into place.
  7. Attach the beater by lining up the shaft with the opening. Make sure the locking pin goes into the slot. Then lift the beater into place and lock it on.
  8. Plug the mixer back in and test it to make sure everything is working correctly.
