Is your Samsung freezer handle cover hanging on by a thread or refusing to stay in place? A cracked or broken freezer handle cover can make opening and closing your freezer a frustrating ordeal. Don’t worry—our step-by-step guide and handy video tutorial below will walk you through the process of replacing it yourself, saving you both time and money!

The freezer handle cover is the removable panel that sits behind the actual handle on the freezer door of your Samsung fridge. It covers up the handle mounting area and provides a smooth exterior surface to the door.

Over time from normal wear and tear, this cover can become damaged or broken. If your freezer handle cover is cracked or has broken locking tabs, it needs to be replaced. A faulty cover can lead to issues with opening and closing the freezer door.

Thankfully, replacing this part yourself is cost-effective and doesn’t require any special technical skills. With some simple tools, a new Samsung DA67-02291A cover, and the instructions in this DIY guide, you can set yourself up with a fully functioning freezer door again.

If you need any other parts for your fridge, you can use your model number to search AppliancePartsPros.com. Most orders arrive in just two business days.

Keep safety first

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

Replacement instructions

Step 1: Open up the freezer door

  1. Open up the freezer door to gain access to the freezer door handle cover.
  2. Find the handle mounting panel situated directly behind the movable door handle. This entire section will need to come off to replace the cover.

Step 2: Remove the door handle

  1. On the opposite end of the hinge, lift up the handle to find the set screw that holds the door handle in place. Use your 2.5 mm Allen wrench to loosen (not fully remove) this set screw.
  2. Pull firmly on the door handle to slide it off from both the left and right mounting studs on the door. You may need to wiggle it loose but avoid excessive force.
  3. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the round mounting stud. Set all handle hardware aside carefully in a safe spot.

Step 3: Remove the old freezer handle cover

  1. The damaged freezer handle cover is now accessible for removal. Find the two locking tabs, one on either side of the cover.
  2. Lift upwards on the front lip of the panel near these locking tabs to release them from the door. Then pull the entire cover straight forward to detach the rear alignment tabs.
  3. Behind the panel are two white and black spacers. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws holding these spacers in place.
  4. Carefully take out both spacers. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently push the spacer to the back and lift up on it with the needle nose pliers to remove it.
  5. Look inside the opening of the door for a small spring mechanism. Press this back with the flathead screwdriver.
  6. Grasp and fully remove the old freezer handle cover.

Step 4: Transfer parts from the old cover

Your new Samsung replacement cover will not come with a pre-installed hinge pin or screw plate. These must be removed from the old panel and transferred over.

  1. Clean any grease that may be on your fridge’s hinge pin or screw plate.
  2. Push the pin out to remove it, then use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the metal screw that holds the plate on. Set these parts aside to mount on the new cover.
  3. Wipe away any dust or grime from these salvaged components before installing the new freezer handle cover.

Step 5: Install the replacement freezer handle cover

  1. Carefully insert the screw plate into the backside of the new DA67-02291A replacement panel in the proper orientation.
  2. Flip the cover over and insert the mounting stud through the front and tighten it down with the Phillips head screwdriver. This part was redesigned so it no longer has the screw holes, so you will need to apply a drop of super glue to either side of the stud, where the screws would go, to reinforce this positioning.
  3. Press the hinge pin into place by pressing it through the slot. Make sure the slot in the middle of the pin locks onto the tab in the middle. You can add a dab of white lithium grease to each end before installing it so it moves smoothly.
  4. Use the flathead screwdriver to press back the door’s internal spring mechanism.
  5. Slide the new cover into position, then release the spring mechanism.

Step 6: Reassemble the freezer door

  1. Insert the black and white plastic spacers in the correct left and right positions. Replace the screws you removed earlier removed to hold them in place.
  2. Reinstall the cover by aligning the rear tabs on the cover with their corresponding slots and firmly pushing it until it clicks into place.
  3. Line up the handle with the mounting stud on the left side. Lift it up and press the handle to the left to lock it into place.
  4. On the right side, place the handle on the mounting stud and use the 2.5 mm Allen wrench to tighten down the set screw.
  5. Open and close the freezer door several times to make sure there’s no catching or rubbing.
