Safety precautions
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
- Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.
Replacement steps
Step 1 – Lift the main top of the dryer
- Use a putty knife in the corners of the main top, then push in on the spring clip and lift.
- Lean the top back against the wall so it stays up and out of the way. Alternatively, you can hook a strap into the cabinet and latch it to the main top to hold it in place.
Step 2 – Disconnect wire harnesses
- Disconnect the wire harness for the door switch.
- Use the 5/16-inch nut driver to remove each screw at the top corners.
- Remove the front panel. You can now see the front bulkhead and the duct assembly.
- Disconnect the wiring harness for the sensor bars at the bottom of the bulkhead.
Step 3 – Remove the outlet grille
- Remove the 5/16-inch screw from the top of the duct.
- Remove the 2 Phillips head screws inside the outlet grill.
- Lift the outlet grill out.
Step 4 – Remove the old bulkhead
- Find the 4 – 1/4-inch screws that hold the bulkhead in place. Remove the 2 bottom ones, but only loosen the upper ones.
- Lift the bulkhead off.
- Use a ratchet and socket to remove the roller and shafts.
Step 5 – Reassemble the dryer
- Reinstall the rollers and shafts on the new bulkhead and hang the bulkhead back on the cabinet.
- Tighten the screws and install the bottom screws.
- Slide the outlet grille back in place and put the Phillips head screws back in.
- Install the 5/16-inch screws back into the lint duct assembly.
- Reconnect the wire harness.
- Install the front panel by getting the bottom sides on the clips, then push the top into place and install the 5/16-inch screws for the front panel.
- With the door open, close the main top and lock it in place.
- Install the lint filter.
- Restore power to the dryer and run a test cycle to make sure it’s working correctly.
Dryer maintenance
- After every load, clean the lint filter to allow for proper airflow and prevent buildup that could start fires. Remove any lint or debris that’s accumulated in the filter. Rinse and scrub the filter with a mild detergent to remove stubborn debris; make sure it’s completely dry before reinstalling.
- Check the mesh screen of the filter for tears and replace it if it’s damaged.
- Regularly inspect and clean the venting system to ensure it’s free from blockages. Use a vacuum cleaner or a long-handled brush to remove any lint or debris that may have accumulated in the vent housing. Be sure to clean the entire length of the duct and the vent attached to the back of the dryer.
- Clean the drum regularly to remove any accumulated lint or debris. Use a soft brush or a clean cloth to wipe down the interior of the drum.
- Check the door seal (gasket) regularly and replace it if it’s not sealing properly.
- Check the vent hood on the outside of your home for debris and damage. Replace it with a new one if needed. Use a vacuum or cleaning kit with a long-handled brush to remove lint and other debris inside the ducting.
