Samantha Bullington / Thursday May 2, 2024

Is your dishwasher leaving puddles on the kitchen floor? A worn-out tub gasket might be the culprit, letting water leak out during the wash cycle. Don’t worry—replacing the gasket yourself is easier than you think, and we’ve got a step-by-step video guide below to walk you through the process.

Need a part?  Search below using your appliance model number to find exactly what you need:

The tub gasket (also called a door seal) is typically made of rubber or silicone and fits into a channel around the inner rim of the tub. It helps form a water-tight barrier when the door is closed. This prevents leaks from your dishwasher and also helps contain the heat and pressure.

A gasket is one of the most common DIY repairs on dishwashers. Over time, it can become cracked or torn, which may allow water to escape during the wash cycle.

Check out this guide for all the information you need to know to swap out your GE dishwasher gasket for a new one.

Keep safety first

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.

How to replace the tub seal

Follow these steps to switch out the tub gasket in your GE dishwasher.

  1. Unplug the dishwasher and shut off the water supply.
  2. Open the dishwasher door.
  3. Reach in and carefully pull out the old gasket.
  4. Clean the channel the gasket sits in. Make sure it’s free of debris and any leftover pieces from the old seal before installing the new one. You can use a flathead screwdriver to clear out debris in the seal channel.
  5. Find the yellow mark (this marks the center of the gasket) on the new gasket. Line up the yellow mark with the center of the latch on the tub.
  6. Starting at the latch, push the gasket into the groove around the tub.
  7. Make sure the gasket is pressed into the channel at the bottom. It should lay over like the old one did and point toward the center of the dishwasher.
  8. Plug the unit back in
  9. Restore the water supply to the dishwasher.
  10. Run a test cycle to check for any leaks.
