Safety tips

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

How to replace the dispenser cover

Follow these steps to swap out the dispenser cover in your LG refrigerator.

Step 1: Remove the dispenser assembly

  1. Turn off the fridge and disconnect it from the power outlet.
  2. Shut off the water supply to the fridge.
  3. Starting at the bottom, slide a putty knife behind the dispenser housing and gently pry it away from the door. Work the putty knife around the edge to release the snap clips.
  4. Pull the assembly out and turn it over.
  5. Disconnect the 4 plugs on the backside.
  6. Set the dispenser assembly on a table or other clean work surface.

Step 2: Disassemble the dispenser

  1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws holding on the plastic funnel piece. Take off the funnel.
  2. Find the spring that connects the funnel. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully detach and release this spring.
  3. Remove the ice dispenser button. One side is lower, so you’ll slide the button out of this side first. As you slide it out, you’ll detach a spring – be careful not to lose this!
  4. Press the small plastic retaining clips and slide the water dispenser button out. Again, don’t lose the two springs inside.
  5. Remove all screws holding the control board and disconnect the harness attached to it. Lift off the control board.
  6. Peel off the piece of tape and remove the small optic control board and switch next to it.
  7. Detach the touchpad.
  8. Run a flat-blade screwdriver around the edge to release the clips.
