Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the appliance or parts. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your fridge or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the fridge has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access fridge parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your fridge or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the fridge or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

Replacement steps

Step 1: Remove the freezer door

  1. Fully open the fridge and freezer doors.
  2. Remove the upper and lower slide-out trays from the freezer compartment and set them aside.
  3. Detach the side rails from the freezer cabinet. There are locking tabs that hold each rail in place, so use a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pry them loose and lift the rails off. Remove both left and right rails.
  4. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the two screws securing the top hinge cover. Remove the freezer door.
  5. Lift up on the door to release the hinge hooks, then gently pull the door forward to detach the rear mounting hooks. Set the door off to the side.

Step 2: Remove interior components

  1. Remove the left side rail assembly. Disconnect the connector plug, then take out the three Phillips screws securing the assembly. Be careful with the rear locking tab as you maneuver it out.
  2. Remove the upper freezer tray left side support and air duct cover. Both are secured with Phillips screws and locking tabs that need to be released.
  3. Repeat the same process to detach the right side rail support bracket.

Step 3: Detach the evaporator cover panel

The evaporator coil, defrost control assembly, and other components are housed behind the rear access panel. Here’s how to detach it:

  1. Release the locking tabs on the outer edges of the panel with your fingers.
  2. Carefully pull the panel off the rear wall. Hold the panel gently – don’t let it drop! Set it to the side.
  3. There are several wire connectors on the top. Unplug these. You can unplug the temperature sensor and defrost control wire connectors by pressing down on the locking tabs and pulling firmly.
  4. Release the locking tabs on the outer edges.

Step 4: Remove the defrost control assembly

  1. Take note of the position of all the wires before disconnecting anything.
  2. Use wire cutters to remove the plastic zip ties bundling the wire harnesses.
  3. Remove the fuse above the defrost heater tube.
  4. Find the defrost control assembly mount along the right side. Unplug it by pressing down on the connector’s locking tab and pulling it free.
  5. Detach the old defrost control assembly and remove it from the refrigerator.

Step 5: Install the new defrost control

  1. Position the new defrost control assembly in the same orientation as the old one so the thermistor and heating element make solid contact.
  2. Plug the electrical connector into the defrost control mount.
  3. Rebundle loose wiring with zip ties just like it was originally.
  4. Reinstall the fuse.

Step 6: Reassemble the freezer

  1. Reattach all the wire connectors in the right spots.
  2. Reinstall the evaporator cover panel and snap the panel back into place.
  3. Use the Phillips screws to replace the right and left side rail supports.
  4. Reattach the air duct cover and upper tray support bracket.
  5. Put the freezer door back into position by sliding it onto the hinge mounts and securing the side screws.
  6. Reinstall the door rails by snapping their locking tabs back into the mounting clips.
  7. Slide the upper and lower freezer trays back into their spots.
