Let’s walk through the replacement process together.
What is the evaporator cover assembly & when should I replace it?
The evaporator cover assembly is a key component in refrigerators that helps them stay cool. It’s located at the back of the fresh food compartment and includes the evaporator motor and temperature sensor. The evaporator cover has built-in air ducts and insulation to direct cold air and maintain consistent temperatures.
If your Samsung refrigerator is no longer cooling and you’ve confirmed the defrost system is working and the condensation drain isn’t clogged, it’s likely time to replace the evaporator cover assembly.
You may need to swap out the evaporator cover assembly if:
- There are cracks or holes in the cover
- The fresh food section is warmer than usual
- There’s frost or moisture buildup in the fridge
- You can feel drafts of air escaping from behind the cover
What you need
- Putty knife
- Phillips screwdriver
- New Samsung evaporator cover assembly (make sure it’s compatible with your specific model before installing)
Safety precautions
When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
- Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.
How to replace the evaporator cover assembly
Follow these steps to swap out the evaporator cover assembly in your Samsung refrigerator:
- Turn off the fridge and unplug it from the power outlet.
- Shut off the water supply to the fridge.
- Pull the vegetable drawers straight out, lift them and slide them out completely.
- Lift the front of each shelf to release the rear hooks, then slide them out. Remove all shelves from the fridge section.
- Press the locking tabs on both sides of the filter housing and lift to detach the vegetable drawer cover. Slide it out.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the 4 screws holding the rear panel in place.
- Insert a putty knife into the slots on either side to depress the locking tabs that are holding the old assembly in place.
- Pull the old evaporator cover straight out from the bottom to detach it from the refrigerator’s rear panel.
- Unclip the two wire harness connectors that are plugged into the old cover assembly. There should be one large white plug on the bottom and one smaller blue plug on top.
- Peel off any protective plastic film or tape that’s attached to the new assembly.
- Attach the two wire harness plugs to the connectors on the back of the new cover. Make sure the white plug is on the bottom and the blue one is on top.
- Angle the top of the new cover into the upper groove on the refrigerator’s rear panel.
- Bring the bottom of the cover into position and press the sides firmly into place. You’ll hear a clicking sound as the locking tabs engage.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to reinstall the two larger screws into the bottom holes and secure the bottom of the cover.
- Set the vegetable drawer cover on the supports, then push back to lock into place.
- Slide the shelves back onto the hooks and cutouts, starting with the bottom row.
- Position the vegetable drawers on the tracks, slide them partly in, then push them into the fridge.
- Reattach the rear panel with the original screws.
- Plug the fridge back into the power outlet.
- Reconnect the water supply to the fridge.
