Samantha Bullington / Wednesday January 3, 2024

Is your refrigerator struggling to keep its cool? A faulty temperature sensor might be the culprit, causing inconsistent cooling and spoiled food. Luckily, our step-by-step guide featuring a handy how-to video just below will show you how to replace it yourself and save on costly repair bills!

Do you have an LG or Kenmore refrigerator that isn’t cooling correctly or maintaining the right temperature? If adjusting the settings doesn’t fix the issue, you may need to replace the temperature sensor. The sensor relays ambient temperature data to the main control board, which turns the compressor on and off. When the temperature sensor fails, it can lead to warmer food or inconsistent cooling in your fridge.

By replacing the sensor yourself, you can save time and money compared to calling an appliance repair technician.

Today we’re going to walk through the steps for accessing, testing and swapping out the temperature sensor in your LG refrigerator. With some know-how and minimal parts, even novice DIY-ers can complete this repair.

If you still need a replacement sensor EBD60925804, you can order one here. If you need other parts for your LG fridge, you can enter your model number at AppliancePartsPros.com or visit this page.

How the temperature sensor works

The temperature sensor contains a resistor that changes resistance values based on the surrounding ambient air temperature inside the refrigerator.

This data is transmitted to the main control board. The board then turns the compressor and refrigeration system on or off as needed to maintain the interior at the desired cool, set temperature.

The temperature sensor can fail due to normal wear and tear. When it stops providing accurate temperature readings, the fridge may struggle to regulate itself. Foods can spoil if the interior temperature is too warm.

You may need to replace the temperature sensor if…

  • The interior temperature is too warm or too cold
  • You’re unable to adjust the temperature settings
  • You frequently find frost buildup
  • Food is spoiling in the fridge
  • The temperature sensor’s resistance value is out of the normal range

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the machine or parts. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your fridge or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the fridge has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your fridge or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing fridge parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

Replacement steps

Once you’ve tested and confirmed the temperature sensor is faulty, follow these instructions to remove and replace it:

Step 1 – Find the temperature sensor

On most LG refrigerators, you’ll find the temperature sensor mounted inside the cover frame at the top center portion of the fresh food compartment.

To access it, you’ll need to open both French door panels. You should see the sensor behind a small removable cover on the ceiling of the fridge.
