How to Replace the Control Board in Your Dryer — A Straightforward DIY Fix

Your dryer powers on but nothing happens. Or maybe the display is flickering, the cycle won’t start, or the buttons have stopped responding entirely. You press Start and get silence, or worse, the dryer runs for a few seconds and shuts itself off. When the basics check out fine (power supply, thermal fuse, door switch) and the dryer still won’t cooperate, the control board is almost always the culprit.

We’ve replaced more of these than we can count, and here’s what we can tell you: this is not a difficult repair. It’s mostly unplugging wire harnesses and removing a few screws. If you can swap out a car stereo or change a light fixture, you can handle a dryer control board. Plan for about 30 to 45 minutes, a little longer if it’s your first time.

What the Control Board Does

The control board is the brain of your dryer. It manages everything: cycle selection, temperature regulation, motor control, moisture sensor readings, timer functions, and display output. Every signal in the dryer passes through or originates from this board.

There are actually two boards in many dryers: the main electronic control board (usually mounted at the back of the dryer or behind the console) and the user interface board (the one directly behind the buttons and display). When people say “control board,” they usually mean the main board, but the symptoms can overlap. We’ll cover how to tell the difference below.

When the main control board fails, the dryer essentially loses the ability to coordinate its own functions. The motor might not get the signal to start. The heating circuit might not engage. Here’s what catches most people off guard: a bad control board can look like a bad heating element, a bad motor, or a bad sensor. That’s because the board controls all of those components. If you’ve already tested the downstream parts and they check out, the board is where your attention should go.

One quick trick: unplug the dryer for five full minutes, then plug it back in. If the symptoms change even slightly (the display comes back briefly, a different error code appears), that’s a strong hint the board has failing components. It’s not a fix, but it helps confirm your diagnosis.

Tools You’ll Need

This is a light-duty repair. Here’s what to have on hand:

  • Quarter-inch nut driver or socket

  • Phillips-head screwdriver

  • Flathead screwdriver or putty knife (for releasing console clips on some models)

  • Phone or camera (to photograph wire harness positions before disconnecting)

  • Small bowl or magnetic tray for screws

That phone camera is more important than any other tool on this list. Control boards can have six, eight, even ten or more wire harness connections. Every connector is keyed so it only fits in one spot, but when you’re staring at a brand-new board with empty terminals, a photo of the original layout makes reassembly completely stress-free.

Unplug the dryer before you start. If it’s a gas dryer, also turn off the gas supply valve. No exceptions.

Step-by-Step: Replacing the Control Board

The exact location of the control board varies by brand and model. On most top-panel dryers (Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, Amana), the main control board lives behind the rear console panel. On some Electrolux, Frigidaire, and Samsung models, it may be housed in the back panel of the dryer itself. Either way, the process follows the same general pattern.

  1. Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall far enough to work behind it comfortably. For gas dryers, disconnect the gas line or shut off the supply valve.

  2. Remove the console or back panel. On top-console models, look for screws along the rear edge of the console (usually two or three quarter-inch hex-head screws). Remove them and rotate the console forward or lift it up to access the board. On rear-access models, remove the screws securing the back panel and set it aside.

  3. Photograph every wire harness connection. Take multiple angles. Get close-ups. You’ll thank yourself later. If your connectors have locking tabs, note which direction they face.

  4. Disconnect the wire harnesses. Press the locking tab on each connector and pull it straight out. Don’t yank on the wires themselves, grip the plastic connector body. Some connectors are tight and may require a gentle wiggle. A flathead screwdriver can help release stubborn locking tabs.

  5. Remove the mounting screws. The board is typically held to a bracket or the console frame with two to four Phillips or hex-head screws. In some models, the board snaps into a mounting plate. Remove the screws and note whether the board sits on standoffs or spacers, those need to go back in the same positions.

  6. Lift the old board out and set it aside. Compare it to your new board before installing. The connector layout, mounting holes, and overall dimensions should match exactly.

  7. Mount the new board using the same screws and standoffs you removed. Snug the screws down; don’t overtighten. These are threading into plastic standoffs or thin metal, and stripped threads here are an unnecessary headache.

  8. Reconnect every wire harness. This is where your photos pay off. Push each connector in until you hear or feel the locking tab click. Give each one a gentle tug to make sure it’s seated.

  9. Reassemble the console or back panel. Replace all screws and make sure nothing is pinched between the panel and the dryer body.

  10. Plug the dryer back in (and reopen the gas valve for gas models). Push it back into position.

Testing the Repair

Power the dryer on and check the display first. You should see a normal startup, no garbled text, no blinking error codes. Select a timed dry cycle (not auto-sense, just a basic timed heat cycle) and hit Start.

Listen for the motor to engage and the drum to spin. Open the door after a minute or two and feel for heat. If the drum is spinning, the display is responsive, and heat is building, your new board is doing its job.

Run a full cycle with a load of towels. This tests the board’s ability to manage the complete sequence: heating, tumbling, cool-down, and shut-off. If everything runs to completion without error codes or unexpected stops, you’re done.

One thing we see occasionally, some dryers require a brief “calibration” or reset after a board swap. This usually just means running one complete cycle, and the board auto-calibrates from there. If your model has a specific recalibration sequence, it’ll typically be noted on the instruction sheet that ships with the new board.
