How to replace the damper control on a Frigidaire refrigerator
Steven E / Thursday May 15, 2025
Is the temperature uneven in your Frigidaire fridge? Food freezing in some spots while other areas aren’t cold enough? The issue may be a faulty damper control, part number 241600902. This motorized component regulates airflow to maintain consistent cooling. Replacing it is an easy fix you can tackle yourself. With minimal tools and a new part, you’ll have your refrigerator running smoothly again.
The information in this article may not apply to your specific appliance model. We recommend consulting your manufacturer’s documentation or contact us with any questions.
What is the damper control?
The damper control is a key temperature regulator inside Frigidaire refrigerators. It’s located in the upper left corner of the fresh food compartment. This motorized gate opens and closes to modulate airflow from the freezer section into the fridge. The control is operated by the thermostat and adaptive defrost unit.
If certain areas of the fridge are too warm while other spots freeze, it likely indicates a problem with the damper control. Food freezing in the top and middle of the fresh food section is a common symptom. Replacing the faulty damper control will resolve these inconsistent temperature issues. Luckily, it’s a straightforward repair you can perform yourself in very little time.
Tools needed
Before you get started, these are the only tools required for accessing and removing the old damper control. Having them on hand will make the process smoother.
Parts and tools needed
- Coin screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Replacement damper assembly (241600902)
Safety precautions
Safety should always be a priority when working on any appliance. Here are a few practical tips to help you stay safe:
- Turn off the power to the appliance by unplugging it or switching off the circuit breaker before starting any maintenance or repairs. This protects you from the risk of electric shock.
- Wear insulated gloves to shield your hands from sharp edges, pinching hazards, or debris.
- Work at a steady pace and take your time to avoid accidents or injuries.
- Make sure your workspace is well-lit so you can clearly see and access the parts you’re working on.
- Keep the area clear of clutter, and ensure children and pets stay out of the workspace.
- Never handle internal parts with wet hands. Check that both your hands and the work area are completely dry.
- Refer to your appliance’s user manual for any specific instructions or safety guidelines related to the part or repair.
- Handle parts gently to avoid damage to the appliance or potential injuries from applying too much force.
- Use safety glasses when dealing with chemicals, dust, or large debris to protect your eyes from harm.
- If the appliance was recently used, give it enough time to cool down before working on any heated components.
- Take photos or notes of wiring connections and terminals before disconnecting anything to make reassembly easier.
- Avoid touching exposed wires or terminals. If you must handle wires, use non-conductive tools or wear insulated gloves to minimize the risk of electrical shock.
Removing the control panel
With your tools ready, let’s dive into the repair steps:
- Open the refrigerator door to access the control panel. Remove the single screw in the upper front cover using a coin screwdriver. Pull down gently on the cover to detach it.
- Take out the water filter by pressing its release button and pulling it straight out. This lightens the control panel assembly for easier handling.
- Use the coin screwdriver to remove the quarter-inch screw behind the filter housing. Next, unscrew the three screws securing the control panel. Twist out the interior light bulb by hand. Then remove the rear panel screw.
- Carefully pivot the control panel assembly downward. Detach the two water tubes from the back by pressing their release collars while pulling. Unplug the wire connector.
Removing the old damper control
With the control panel detached, you now have access to the damper control.
- Carefully peel away the foam strip holding the damper to the housing. Go slowly to avoid tearing. Use a flathead screwdriver to help pry it off.
- Remove the tape and detach the two thermostat sensors from the damper control housing. Take note of the wire positions.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to detach the wire terminals. Remove the motor plug by pressing its locking tab. Lift off the old damper control.
Installing the new damper control
With the faulty damper removed, install the new replacement part by following these steps:
- Plug in the new motor connector making sure it clicks into place. Reattach the wire terminals following the same configuration as before.
- Carefully stick the thermostat sensors onto the new damper control housing. Replace the tape to hold them securely.
- Remove the protective film from the adhesive back of the foam damper strip. Firmly press the strip onto the edge of the damper control to seal it.
Reassembling the refrigerator
To complete the repair, reinstall the damper control and reassemble the refrigerator:
- Insert the thermostat sensor tube into the freezer compartment insulation. Plug in the control panel wiring. Attach the water supply tubes.
- Position the control panel back into place. Reinsert and tighten the screws securing it and the rear panel removed earlier.
- Replace the interior light bulb by twisting it in clockwise. Push the water filter fully into its housing until it clicks.
- Finally, reattach the front cover panel and tighten its retaining screw.
