How to replace the motor coupler in a top-load Kenmore washer

Steven E / Friday March 29, 2024

If your Kenmore top-load washer isn’t agitating or spinning, the motor coupler could be the culprit. The motor coupler connects the washer motor to the transmission and allows the agitator and spin basket to move. Over time, the rubber or plastic couplers can wear out, crack, or become misaligned.

If you need a replacement motor coupler or other parts for your Kenmore washer, you can use your model number to find what you need at AppliancePartsPros.com. We also have thousands of free DIY troubleshooting and repair guides to help you fix your appliance yourself.

What you’ll need

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Putty knife
  • Replacement motor coupler (make sure it’s compatible with your specific washer model BEFORE installing)

Disclaimer: The specific tools required may vary depending on the model of your appliance and the type of fasteners used on it. Always consult the user manual or refer to any specific instructions provided by the manufacturer for the recommended tools for your appliance model.

Keep safety first

Your safety should always be the top priority when performing any appliance repair.

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.

How to replace the motor coupler

Step 1: Access the console

  1. Make sure the washer is turned off and disconnected from the power source.
  2. Turn off the water supply to the washer.
  3. Use a putty knife to release the clips that hold the console to the cabinet. These clips are located on the left and right sides of the console, about an inch from each end. Gently slide the putty knife under the console and push each clip towards the back of the washer while prying up and pulling forward. Repeat this process on the other side until both clips are released.
  4. Flip the console over to expose the cabinet’s interior.

Step 2: Remove the cabinet

  1. Find the two brass clips holding the cabinet to the back panel.
  2. Disconnect the lid switch wire harness.
  3. Tilt the cabinet forward and slide it off the frame. Set it aside.

Step 3: Remove the drain pump

  1. Find the drain pump in the center, underneath the tub.
  2. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the two clips holding the drain pump in place.
  3. Slide the drain pump forward and off the motor shaft. Leave the hoses connected as you go.
  4. Move the pump aside so you have space to work on the motor coupler.

Step 4: Disconnect the motor

  1. Find the two clips holding the motor to the gearcase (also known as the transmission pulley).
  2. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to pop the clips off.
  3. Disconnect the wire harness leading to the old motor since the motor can become heavy once the clips are removed.

Step 5: Replace the motor coupler

The motor coupler consists of three separate pieces: Two plastic pieces that fit onto the shafts of the motor and gearcase and a rubber grommet that fits between the two plastic pieces.

  1. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or a small prybar to remove the existing coupler from both the old motor and gearcase shafts.
  2. Install the new coupler by fitting the plastic pieces onto the shafts of the new motor and gearcase. Tap them down gently until the end of the shaft is flush with the face of the coupler. Make sure the flat sides of the coupler align with the flat sides of the shaft.
  3. Place the rubber grommet onto the gearcase side of the coupler and align the legs of the coupler so they fit together when you reposition the motor.
  4. Insert the clips back into their designated positions to secure the new motor in place, then set the motor into its original location.

Step 6: Reinstall the drain pump

  1. Reposition the drain pump and make sure the shaft of the motor and the drain pump are aligned.
  2. Secure the drain pump by popping the two clips back into place.

Step 7: Reassemble the washer

  1. Carefully reinstall the cabinet. Make sure it’s properly secured to the back panel with the brass clips.
  2. Reconnect the lid switch wire harness.
  3. Flip the console back to the upright position and secure it to the cabinet using the side clips.
