How to Replace the Operating Thermostat in Your Dryer

Your dryer runs and runs, but the clothes come out damp. Or maybe the opposite: everything is scorching hot, and your favorite shirt just shrunk two sizes. Either way, something is clearly off with how your dryer manages heat. Before you start suspecting the heating element or the control board, there is a smaller, less obvious part that deserves your attention first: the operating thermostat.
We’ve replaced more of these than we can count, and it is one of the most straightforward dryer repairs you can tackle at home. Thirty minutes, a couple of basic tools, and you are back in business.
What the Operating Thermostat Does
The operating thermostat is the part that regulates the temperature inside the drum while the dryer is running. It is different from the high-limit thermostat (which acts as a safety cutoff) and different from the cycling thermostat that some people confuse it with, although on certain models these terms overlap. Here is the short version of what the operating thermostat does: it monitors the air temperature inside the drum and tells the heating element (or gas valve) when to kick on and when to shut off. It is constantly cycling during a normal dry cycle to keep the temperature within a target range. When this part fails, your dryer loses its ability to regulate heat altogether.
Signs Your Operating Thermostat Has Failed
A bad operating thermostat tends to show up in pretty obvious ways:

Here is what catches most people off guard: a thermostat can fail in two directions. It can fail “open,” meaning it breaks the circuit and cuts off heat entirely. Or it can fail “closed,” meaning it never signals the heater to stop. That second scenario is the more dangerous one, because your dryer just keeps pumping heat with no regulation.

Tools You’ll Need
This is not a complicated job. Here is what to have on hand:

Your phone or a quick sketch to note wire positions
That last one matters more than you think. The operating thermostat typically has two wires connected to it, and on some models there are other components nearby with similar-looking connectors. Snap a photo before you disconnect anything. It takes two seconds and saves you from second-guessing yourself during reassembly.
Before you touch anything inside the dryer, unplug it from the wall. If it is a gas dryer, also shut off the gas supply valve. No exceptions.
Where to Find the Operating Thermostat
On most residential dryers, whether you are working on a Whirlpool, GE, Maytag, Samsung, or LG, the operating thermostat is mounted on or near the blower housing or the exhaust duct at the back of the dryer. It is a small, round, disc-shaped component, usually about the size of a quarter, held in place by one or two screws.
On many top-brand dryers, you will access it by removing the back panel. Some front-load models require you to go in through the front or bottom panel instead. Testing the Operating Thermostat
Before you order a replacement, confirm the thermostat is actually the problem. This takes about two minutes with a multimeter.

Make sure the dryer is unplugged.

Access the thermostat by removing the appropriate panel (usually the rear panel, held on by several screws around the perimeter).

Disconnect the wires from the thermostat terminals. Pull on the connectors, not the wires themselves.

Set your multimeter to the lowest resistance (ohms) setting.

Touch one probe to each terminal on the thermostat.
At room temperature, a functioning thermostat should read close to zero ohms, meaning there is continuity and the circuit is closed. If your multimeter reads OL (open loop) or shows no continuity at all, the thermostat has failed open and needs to be replaced.
If the thermostat reads continuity but you are still having heat regulation issues, the problem may be intermittent; the thermostat might test fine when cool but fail under heat. In that case, replacement is still the right call if you have already ruled out the heating element, thermal fuse, and exhaust blockage.
Replacing the Operating Thermostat Step by Step
Once you have confirmed the thermostat is bad, the swap itself is about as simple as dryer repairs get. We have done hundreds of these and the whole thing typically takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall enough to work comfortably behind it. If it is a gas dryer, disconnect the gas line carefully or just work with the dryer pulled out as far as the line allows.

Remove the back panel screws and set the panel aside.

Locate the operating thermostat on the blower housing or exhaust path. It will be a small disc with two wires attached.

Take a photo of the wire connections so you know exactly how they go back on.

Pull the wire connectors off the thermostat terminals. Use a gentle rocking motion if they are tight; needle-nose pliers can help, but grip the connector, not the wire.

Remove the one or two mounting screws holding the thermostat to the housing.

Lift the old thermostat out.

Set the new thermostat in position. Make sure it sits flush against the housing; good metal-to-metal contact is critical for accurate temperature sensing.

Thread the mounting screw or screws back in and snug them down. Do not overtighten. You want firm contact, not a stripped hole.

Reconnect the wires to the new thermostat terminals. They should push on with a firm click.

Reinstall the back panel.

Plug the dryer back in (and reopen the gas valve if applicable).
One thing we see people overlook: if the thermostat mounting surface has lint buildup or corrosion, clean it off before installing the new part. The thermostat reads temperature through contact with that metal surface. A layer of gunk between the thermostat and the housing can throw off its readings from day one.
Verifying the Repair
Run a normal timed dry cycle with a small load of damp towels. Within the first five to ten minutes, you should feel warm air coming from the exhaust vent outside your home. Let the cycle run and check the clothes at the end, they should be dry and warm, not hot enough to scorch.
If you have a thermometer or infrared temperature gun, the exhaust air should be in the range of 125 to 135 degrees Fahrenheit on a medium heat setting during active heating. The temperature will rise and fall as the thermostat cycles the heater on and off, that cycling behavior is exactly what you want to see. It means the new thermostat is doing its job.
If the dryer still is not heating after the replacement, double-check your wire connections and make sure they are seated firmly. Beyond that, the thermal fuse and heating element are the next components worth testing.
