How to Replace the Temperature Selector Switch on Your Dryer

You set your dryer to low heat for a load of delicates, hit start, and twenty minutes later everything comes out scorching hot. Or maybe the opposite: you put it to high, and your clothes are still damp after a full cycle. When the temperature setting on the control panel stops matching what’s actually happening inside the drum, the temperature selector switch is almost always the culprit. We’ve replaced hundreds of these over the years, and it’s one of the most straightforward dryer repairs you’ll run into. Most people knock it out in under 30 minutes.

What the Temperature Selector Switch Does

The temperature selector switch is the rotary knob or push-button control on your dryer’s console that lets you choose between heat settings, typically something like high, medium, low, and no heat or air fluff. Internally, this switch routes electrical current to the correct heating circuit for the temperature you’ve selected. Each position on the switch connects a different combination of contacts, which changes how the heater element and cycling thermostat work together to maintain your chosen temperature.

When this switch fails, those internal contacts either stick, corrode, or break altogether. The result is that the dryer either defaults to one heat setting regardless of where you turn the knob, produces no heat at all, or behaves erratically, sometimes hot, sometimes not.

Signs Your Temperature Selector Switch Has Failed

A bad temperature selector switch tends to show up in pretty specific ways:

  • The dryer runs at the same temperature no matter which setting you choose

  • One or more heat settings don’t work, but others do

  • The dryer produces no heat on any setting

  • The knob feels loose, wobbly, or doesn’t click into positions like it used to

  • You hear the dryer running normally but the drum air temperature doesn’t match the selected setting

Before you assume it’s the switch, it’s worth ruling out a couple of other things. A dryer that produces zero heat on every setting could also point to a blown thermal fuse, a bad heating element, or a faulty cycling thermostat. But if some settings work and others don’t, or if every setting produces the same temperature, the selector switch jumps right to the top of the suspect list.

Tools You’ll Need

This repair keeps your tool list short:

  • Phillips-head screwdriver

  • Flat-head screwdriver or putty knife (for releasing console clips on some models)

  • Multimeter

  • Smartphone or camera (to photograph wire connections before removing them)

  • Masking tape and a pen (to label wires, if you prefer that method)

That’s it. No specialty tools, no wiring harnesses to fabricate. Just basic hand tools and a way to remember where the wires go.

Before you touch anything, unplug the dryer from the wall outlet. If it’s a gas dryer, also make sure the gas supply valve is turned off. This is a non-negotiable first step.

Testing the Temperature Selector Switch

If you want to confirm the switch is bad before ordering a part, a quick continuity test with your multimeter will tell you everything you need to know.

  1. Unplug the dryer.

  2. Access the back of the control console. On most dryers, you’ll either remove screws at each end of the console’s back panel or release clips along the top edge with a putty knife. The console will then either flip up on hinges or lift off entirely.

  3. Locate the temperature selector switch on the back side of the console panel. It’s the component directly behind the temperature knob, with several wires connected to its terminals.

  4. Take a photo of the wire connections before you disconnect anything. This is the step people skip and then regret. Trust us, take the photo.

  5. Pull the wire connectors off the switch terminals. They’ll be spade connectors and should come off with a firm tug. Don’t yank on the wires themselves, grip the metal connector.

  6. Set your multimeter to continuity or the lowest ohms setting.

  7. With the switch set to a given position, test for continuity between the terminal pairs that should be connected in that position. Your dryer’s wiring diagram (usually found on a sticker inside the cabinet or on the back panel) will show you which terminals should have continuity at each switch position.

If you find an open circuit where there should be continuity, or continuity where there shouldn’t be, the switch is bad. We see corroded and pitted contacts more often than anything else, especially in dryers that have been running for eight or ten years in humid laundry rooms.

Replacing the Temperature Selector Switch

Once you’ve confirmed the switch is the problem, the swap itself is about as simple as dryer repairs get.

  1. If you haven’t already, unplug the dryer and access the back of the control console.

  2. Photograph all wire connections to the old switch. Even if you did this during testing, double-check that you have a clear, well-lit photo. Different brands use different terminal layouts, and getting even one wire on the wrong terminal means the heat settings won’t work correctly.

  3. Disconnect the wires from the old switch. If the connectors are tight, a gentle rocking motion while pulling helps. Needle-nose pliers give you better grip if your fingers are too big for the space, and in some consoles, it’s tight back there.

  4. Remove the mounting screws or release the clips holding the switch to the console panel. Most switches are secured with one or two Phillips-head screws. Some snap into a bracket instead.

  5. Pull the old switch out and set it aside.

  6. Position the new switch in place and secure it with the mounting screws or clips. Make sure it sits flush and the shaft lines up with the knob hole on the front of the console.

  7. Reconnect the wires to the correct terminals, matching your photo exactly. Press each spade connector firmly onto its terminal until it seats with a click.

  8. Reattach the temperature selector knob to the shaft of the new switch. It should push on snugly.

  9. Reassemble the console, flip it back down or reattach the back panel, then replace the screws or clips you removed earlier.

  10. Plug the dryer back in.

The whole process, start to finish, takes about 20 to 30 minutes. The longest part is usually just getting the console open, especially if you haven’t done it before. Here’s what catches most people off guard: the wire connectors can be stubborn to remove, and in tight quarters it’s easy to accidentally bend a terminal. Take your time pulling connectors off, and if a terminal does get bent slightly, straighten it with needle-nose pliers before attaching the new switch.

Verifying the Repair

With the dryer plugged back in, run a quick test before you throw a full load in.

Start by selecting your lowest heat setting and running the dryer with a damp towel inside. After five minutes, open the door and feel the air temperature, it should be warm but definitely not hot. Then switch to the highest heat setting and repeat. You should feel a noticeable jump in temperature. Cycle through each setting if you want to be thorough.

What you’re checking for is that each position on the knob actually produces a different heat level. If they do, the new switch is working exactly as it should. If you’re still getting the same temperature on every setting, go back and double-check your wire connections against the wiring diagram. A swapped wire is the most common reason for post-repair issues, and it’s an easy fix once you spot it.
