Safety precautions

Your safety should always be the top priority when performing any appliance repair.

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

How to test and replace the Samsung dryer’s user interface control

Here are the steps to test and replace the user interface control on your Samsung dryer safely and effectively:

Step 1. Access the main control

  1. Remove the two screws securing the top panel at the back of the dryer using a Phillips screwdriver.
  2. Slide the top panel back, lift it up, and set it aside.
  3. Remove the three mounting screws holding the main control housing to the front and side frame using the Phillips screwdriver.
  4. Rotate the main control carefully to access the wires, making sure no bare wires touch metal parts.

Step 2. Test the voltage

LIVE VOLTAGE WARNING: For this test, the dryer needs to be plugged in and powered on. Please be very careful to protect yourself from electric shock, which has the potential to cause serious injuries. Don’t ever test live voltage if you’re uncomfortable using a multimeter.

  1. Set your multimeter to Volts DC (V with a dotted line).
  2. Place the black probe on the pink wire at pin 4 of connection CN2 and keep it there.
  3. Place the red probe on the white wire at pin 5 of connection CN2 and check for a reading of 5 Volts DC.
  4. Move the red probe to the red wire at pin 6 and check for a reading of 15 Volts DC.
  5. Unplug the power cord or turn off the breaker.
  6. Inspect the wire connection behind the console to confirm it is not loose.
  7. If voltages are correct and the connection is not loose, conclude that the user interface control is faulty.
  8. If any voltage reading was missing, investigate other potential causes.

Step 3. Remove the faulty user interface control

  1. Pull the knob off the console.
  2. Disconnect the wires behind the console.
  3. Lift the console, pulling it away from the dryer, and feed the wires through the top bracket.
  4. Remove the 10 screws securing the user interface control to the console using the Phillips screwdriver.
  5. Detach the faulty user interface control from the console.

Step 4. Install the new user interface control

  1. Position the new user interface control on the console.
  2. Secure the new user interface control with the 10 screws removed earlier.
  3. Attach the knob to the console, aligning the flat spots on the knob and control shaft.
  4. Set the console back in place and feed the wires through the bracket as you proceed.
  5. Connect the user interface control wires to the wire harness.

Step 5. Reassemble the dryer

  1. Rotate the main control back into position and secure it with the three Phillips screws.
  2. Place the top panel approximately three inches back from the console and slide it forward.
  3. Secure the top panel with the final Phillips screws.
  4. Plug the power cord back in or turn the breaker back on.
