Helpful tips

  • Having a helper hold panels in place temporarily while you realign screws makes installation much easier.
  • If you notice buzzing sounds once your dishwasher is reassembled, double-check that insulation panels adhere flush to surfaces without gaps.
  • Be extremely careful when handling ribbon cables for control panels – never bend or twist these tightly.

Safety first

Your safety should always be the top priority when performing any appliance repair.

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.
  • If your appliance has any parts that hold water, turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.

Step 1: Remove the inner door panel

With your supplies gathered, you’re ready to dive into replacing the damaged dishwasher door panel. The first step is accessing the inner workings of your appliance’s front door. Here’s how:

  1. Open the dishwasher door all the way so you can access both sides.
  2. On the left and right edges of the door, you’ll notice six metal retaining screws on each side. Use your Torx T15 screwdriver to remove the middle four screws from each side of the door. Do not remove the top two screws on each side, as these help anchor a control panel in place.
  3. Close the door
  4. Lift off the outer door panel.

With the outer shell removed, you now have access to the inner door panel components, including the damaged section you’ll be replacing shortly.

Step 2: Transfer door components to the new panel

  1. Remove any insulation material that lines the back of the original door panel. This insulation helps muffle noise and vibrations from your running dishwasher.
  2. To remove insulation, simply grasp it firmly and pull it off the old panel. Take care not to tear or damage it.
  3. With the insulation removed, transfer it over and press firmly onto the back of your new replacement Whirlpool door panel. You may need to feed the bottom edge of the insulation into slots or channels to secure it.
  4. Make sure to press down firmly on any insulation flap tabs to ensure the material adheres securely to the new panel. This prevents buzzing sounds when your dishwasher runs.
  5. If your dishwasher door has electronic control buttons on the front panel, carefully detach the control module from the original panel and mount it in the correct spot on your new replacement panel using screws or brackets. Refer to your appliance manual if unsure of how to properly transfer and mount door controls onto the new part.

Caution: Be extremely careful when handling control panel components. Do NOT crimp or pinch any ribbon cables or wiring.

With insulation moved over and controls swapped to the new panel, you’re ready to install it onto your dishwasher.

Step 3: Install the new door panel

You’re in the home stretch now! Just a few more steps to securely install your shiny replacement Whirlpool door panel:

  1. Carefully align the bottom bracket or lip of the new panel so it slides into position behind the front edge of the dishwasher door frame. You may need to angle the panel slightly to fit it into place.
  2. With the bottom bracket slipped securely into place,  slowly lower the door.
  3. Reinstall the eight retaining screws you removed earlier – four on each side edge of the door. Alternate tightening the screws diagonally to ensure even pressure. Be careful not to over-tighten!

With all retaining screws replaced, test opening and closing your dishwasher door to confirm smooth operation. Almost done!

Step 4: Finishing touches

Once you’ve verified normal motion of the newly repaired dishwasher door, there are just a few quick finishing steps:

  1. If there is any protective plastic film remaining on the front panel, peel this off carefully. Use a credit card’s edge to lift corners and remove residue.
  2. Give your Whirlpool dishwasher’s front door a quick wipe-down with a clean, damp towel or cloth to remove fingerprints and dust. Admire your work!

That’s it – you’ve successfully replaced your dishwasher’s damaged front door panel! This repair is a quick and relatively easy way to give new life to a dented or scratched appliance door.
