Safety tips

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to replace the lid latch bezel

Follow these steps to change out the lid latch bezel in your Whirlpool washing machine.

  1. Unplug the washer to eliminate any risk of electric shock.
  2. Remove the back cover plate by taking out the single 1/4-inch screw with a nut driver. Lift the plate off.
  3. Use the 1/4-inch nut driver to remove the two screws located at each back corner of the top panel. Tape can be used to secure the lid to the top panel.
  4. Grasp the top panel edges, pull the top panel forward and lift straight up, using the back as a hinge point. The two brackets at the back of the top panel can be used as hinges by inserting them into the two slots in the same area of the top panel.
  5. Secure the top panel in the open position with a safety strap hooked over two points to prevent it from accidentally closing.
  6. Remove the two Torx screws from the lid latch assembly cover with a Torx 15 screwdriver.
  7. Lift the latch assembly cover up and let it hang by the wires to expose the bezel.
  8. Gently push inward on the top two plastic tabs to free the bezel, then push it outward to release the bottom tabs.
  9. Pull the old bezel straight out from the top panel opening.
  10. Insert the new bezel by aligning the cutout and pressing it into place until the tabs snap into the holes.
  11. Lower the latch assembly cover back into position and secure it with the two Torx screws.
  12. Remove the safety strap and slowly lower the top panel back into the closed position.
  13. Align the front edge and push firmly to engage the latch mechanism.
  14. Replace the two 1/4-inch screws to secure the top panel.
  15. Snap the back cover plate into position and replace its single screw.
  16. Test the lid to make sure it works correctly.
  17. Plug the washer back in and turn the water supply back on.
