Safety tips

When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the appliance or its parts. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

How to test & replace the thermal fuse on a Whirlpool range

Step 1: Access the thermal fuse

  1. If possible, carefully pull the range away from the wall to access the back panel.
  2. Ensure the range is unplugged from the power outlet to avoid any electrical hazards.
  3. Using a 1/4 inch nut driver, remove the screw located at the bottom of the terminal block shield.
  4. Push the shield down to release it, then pull it away from the range. Set the shield aside.
  5. With the 1/4 inch nut driver, remove the screws securing the back oven panel, starting from the bottom.
  6. Once all screws are removed, carefully pull the back panel away from the range and set it aside.
  7. Locate the thermal fuse and disconnect one of the wires attached to it.

Step 2: Test the thermal fuse

  1. Set your multimeter to the continuity setting (usually represented by a sideways Wi-Fi symbol).
  2. Place the meter probes on the terminals of the thermal fuse.
  3. Listen for an audible tone, which indicates continuity.

If the fuse has continuity, it’s functioning correctly. If there is no tone, the fuse has failed and needs to be replaced.

Step 3: How to replace the thermal fuse

  1. Disconnect both wires from the thermal fuse.
  2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screw that secures the thermal fuse in place.
  3. Remove the faulty thermal fuse from the range.
  4. Take the new thermal fuse and place it in the same position as the old one.
  5. Use the Phillips screw you removed earlier to mount the new thermal fuse securely in place.
  6. Reattach the wires to the terminals on the new thermal fuse.
  7. Position the back oven panel onto the range and secure it with the 1/4 inch screws you removed earlier.
  8. Insert the terminal block shield into its mounting slots, lift it up, and secure it with the last 1/4 inch screw.
  9. Plug the range back into the power outlet or turn the breaker back on.
