Keep safety first

Your safety should always be the top priority when performing any appliance repair.

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.

How to troubleshoot an F6 error code

Follow these steps to clear the F6 fault code from your electric Frigidaire range.

Step 1: Access the control board

  1. Unplug the range from the power outlet.
  2. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the rear panel of the range.
  3. Find the wire harness that connects the control board to the motherboard. Refer to your range’s technical manual for exact location details.

Step 2: Test the wire harness

  1. Carefully disconnect the wire harness from both the motherboard and the EOC.
  2. Look for any visible signs of wear, tear, or burning on the wire harness. If you see any damage, replace the harness.
  3. If the harness looks good, set a multimeter to the continuity setting.
  4. Touch the multimeter probes to each end of the wire harness.
  5. Check the meter reading. A good wire harness will show continuity and there will often be an audible tone from the meter. If the multimeter shows “OL” or infinite, then the wire harness is defective and needs to be replaced.

If the wire harness tested OK, move on to the next step.

Step 3: Replace the motherboard

If the harness tests OK, reconnect the harness and replace the motherboard.

  1. Note the connections to the motherboard. Take a photo of them to make reassembly easier.
  2. Disconnect all wiring connected to the motherboard and remove any screws holding it in place.
  3. Set the new motherboard in place and secure it with the screws, then reconnect all the wiring.
  4. Put the rear panel back on and secure it with screws.
  5. Plug the range back in and turn it on to make sure the F6 error has cleared.

If the error returns, replace the oven control board.

Step 4: Replace the control board (if needed)

The control board is usually located behind the range’s control panel.

  1. Note the wiring and any other connections to the board. Take photos to make the replacement process easier.
  2. Disconnect the board and remove any screws holding it.
  3. Connect the new board, secure it with screws and reconnect any wires or harnesses.
  4. Reassemble the range.
  5. Plug the range back in and test the oven to make sure the F6 error is resolved.
