What causes the F0 error code?

Modern KitchenAid induction cooktops have electronic touch controls and embedded control boards that regulate operation. The F0 display indicates that the touch control board is unable to communicate with the electronic boards.

The touch control board is the interface where users input settings via the touch sensors. The electronic boards receive signals from the touch control board and regulate induction coil operation. Without proper communication between these internal components, the cooktop will be unable to function correctly.

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind: 

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.

Troubleshooting steps

Follow these steps to accurately diagnose the underlying issue causing the F0 error code to appear and take corrective action to restore normal operation:

Step 1: Check wiring connections  

  1. Refer to the wiring diagram in the service manual to locate the touch control board and electronic boards. KitchenAid cooktops have a left and right electronic control board. Some models also have a central control unit.
  2. Inspect where the touch control board wires connect to the electronic boards. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted.
  3. Check for any loose, damaged, corroded, or deteriorated wires or terminals.
  4. Ensure no dust, grease, or debris is build up on the connectors.

Step 2: Test wiring continuity

Wiring problems are not as common, but can prevent proper communication between the touch controls and induction power boards. Replace any defective wiring found.

  1. Use a multimeter to check each wire for continuity. There should be no opens or excessive resistance.
  2. Replace any worn or failed wiring harnesses.

Step 3: Replace the electronic board(s)

If the electrical connections are fine, the next step is replacing the electronic board(s). The electronic boards failing is the most common reason for F0 display issues. Replacing the board(s) will resolve many occurrences of F0 errors. Use only replacement boards identical to the original models.

  • On a 2 burner cooktop, replace the single electronic board.
  • For a cooktop with 4 or more burners, replace both the left and right electronic boards.

Step 4: Restore power and check 

After installing new electronic board(s), plug the cooktop back in or switch the circuit breaker on. Check if the F0 error code still appears when the induction cooktop first powers on and runs its diagnostic self-check.

If the new electronic board(s) resolved the communication problem, the cooktop will power on without any error codes. However, if the F0 error code remains, further troubleshooting is needed. Turn off power before continuing.

If the electronic board replacement did not resolve the issue, the problem likely lies with the touch control board. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to definitively test a control board without specialized equipment.
