Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the appliance or its parts. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.

How to fix a leaking LG front load washer

Follow these steps to identify and fix the source of the leak in your washer.

Step 1. Check and test the drain hose

  1. Turn off the washer and unplug it.
  2. Move the washer away from the wall to access the back panel.
  3. Remove the rear access panel by using a Phillips screwdriver to take out the four screws.
  4. Slide the panel up and take it off.
  5. Remove the top panel by taking out the two lower screws from the corner plastic brackets.
  6. Slide the top panel back less than an inch and lift it off.
  7. Locate the drain hose at the right rear corner.
  8. Check the hose for visible cracks or holes.
  9. If no damage is visible, start a spin and drain cycle.
  10. While the washer is draining, carefully bend the drain hose along its length to reveal hidden cracks.
  11. Get down on the floor and use a flashlight to check the hose running along the bottom right side.
  12. Observe all visible hoses for leaks.
  13. If the drain hose is leaking, replace it.
  14. Unplug the washer before moving to the next section.

Step 2. Test the cold water inlet valve

  1. Unplug the washer and turn off both water supply faucets.
  2. Remove the top panel if it is not already removed.
  3. Locate the cold water inlet valve on the left side at the back of the washer.
  4. Slowly open the cold water faucet.
  5. Observe if water starts dripping from the valve body.
  6. If the valve is leaking, turn off the cold water faucet.
  7. Check if the leak stops when the faucet is turned off.
  8. If the leak stops, replace the cold water inlet valve.

Step 3. Test the hot water inlet valve

  1. Unplug the washer and turn off the water supply.
  2. Remove the top panel if it is not already removed.
  3. Locate the hot water inlet valve next to the cold water inlet valve.
  4. Slowly turn on the hot water faucet.
  5. Check if water starts leaking from the hot water valve.
  6. If the valve is leaking, turn off the hot water faucet.
  7. Confirm that the leak stops when the faucet is turned off.
  8. If the leak stops, replace the hot water inlet valve.

Step 4. Inspect the door boot seal

  1. Look for water puddles at the front of the washer.
  2. Visually inspect the boot seal for damage.
  3. Pull the seal slightly to examine it more closely.
  4. Clean the seal if there is any debris or buildup.
  5. Look for small holes, cuts, or cracks on the bottom and sides of the seal.
  6. If the seal is damaged, replace it.
  7. Do not attempt to glue or patch the seal.

Step 5. Check the dispenser assembly

  1. Pull out the dispenser drawer completely.
  2. Check if the drain holes inside the dispenser are clogged.
  3. If the drain holes are clogged, water will pool inside the dispenser.
  4. Clean the dispenser thoroughly to remove dried soap or scum buildup.
  5. Soak the dispenser in white vinegar to dissolve the residue.
  6. Reinstall the dispenser.
  7. Run a wash cycle and check for leaks.
  8. Reassemble all panels.
  9. Plug in the washer.
