Safety tips
Your safety should always be the top priority when performing any appliance repair.
- Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
- If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
- Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
- Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
- Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
- Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
- Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
- Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
- When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
- Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
- Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
- Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.
- Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
How to test and replace the LG front-load washer’s motor harness
Here are the steps to test, remove, and replace the motor harness in an LG front-load washer.
Step 1. Access the motor harness
- Unplug the washer from the electrical outlet.
- Turn off the water supply.
- Place a towel under the water inlet hoses.
- Using pliers, loosen and remove the inlet hoses one at a time.
- Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the four screws securing the rear access panel.
- Slide the rear panel up and remove it.
- Using a 17 mm socket wrench and mallet, loosen and remove the center bolt of the rotor.
- Shake the rotor side to side while pulling it off, being careful not to pinch your fingers.
- Locate the motor harness, which is attached to the stator via a three-wire plug, and to the RPS via a four-wire plug.
- Find the harness connectors inside the plastic bag at the lower left inside the cabinet.
- Using side cutters, clip off the zip tie at the bottom left and pull the plugs out.
- Undo the wire tie, push the plastic bag up, and disconnect the three-wire plug.
Step 2. Test the motor harness
- Set the multimeter to continuity mode (Wi-Fi-like symbol).
- Insert a one-meter probe into the blue wire connector at the disconnect plug.
- Insert the other probe into the blue wire at the stator plug and check for continuity.
- If there is no continuity, the wire is broken and needs repair or replacement.
- Repeat for the yellow and red wires.
- Disconnect the RPS plug (four-wire plug).
- Test each of the four wires using the same method.
- If any wire lacks continuity, repair it or replace the harness if possible.
Step 3. Remove the motor harness
- Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the four screws and metal brackets securing the harness.
- Remove another Phillips screw at the bottom to free the ground wire.
- Using a 10 mm socket wrench, remove the bolts securing the stator.
- Slowly turn the stator over to access the harness connections.
- Unplug both the stator and RPS connectors.
Step 4. Install the new motor harness
- Plug the new motor harness into both the RPS and the stator.
- Turn the stator over and position it onto the tub.
- Align the mounting holes and insert the bolts.
- Tighten the bolts using a 10 mm socket wrench.
Step 5. Secure and Reassemble the motor harness
- Secure the motor harness to the outer tub with four Phillips screws.
- Reinstall the metal bracket at the top.
- Secure the ground wire using a Phillips screw.
- Carefully slide the rotor onto the shaft.
- Hand-tighten the 17 mm bolt, then use a socket wrench to fully secure it.
- Connect both plugs.
- Slide the plastic bag over the connectors and secure it with a wire tie.
- Use a plastic tie to secure the harness and trim the excess with side cutters.
- Position the rear access panel top first, then slide it down into place.
- Secure it with four Phillips screws.
- Attach both inlet hoses.
- Hand-tighten a few threads first, then use pliers to secure them.
- Plug in the washer.
- Turn on the water supply.
- Run a test cycle to check for proper operation.
