What you need

  • Multimeter
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver

The specific tools required may vary depending on the model of your appliance and the type of fasteners used on it.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Shut off the gas supply to prevent any gas leaks while you work.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

How to test and replace the Samsung range’s oven control

Below are the steps to access, test, remove, and replace the oven control on a Samsung range. Follow these carefully to complete the process safely and correctly.

Step 1. Access the oven control

  1. Disconnect power by unplugging the power cord or turning off the circuit breaker.
  2. Pull the range away from the wall to create space for access.
  3. Locate and remove the Phillips head screws securing the back panel.
  4. Carefully detach the back panel to expose the oven control board.

Step 2. Test the oven control

LIVE VOLTAGE WARNING: For this test, the range needs to be plugged in and powered on. Please be very careful to protect yourself from electric shock, which has the potential to cause serious injuries. Don’t ever test live voltage if you’re uncomfortable using a multimeter.

  1. Plug the range back in or turn the power back on to perform a live voltage test. Use extreme caution, as working with live voltage poses a risk of electric shock. If using a multimeter is uncomfortable, do not continue.
  2. Set the multimeter to AC voltage.
  3. Turn the oven on to the bake setting.
  4. Place one probe of the multimeter on the T501 terminal and the other on the T505 terminal.
  5. Check the reading on the multimeter. If it shows 240 VAC, the voltage is correct, and the issue lies elsewhere. If the voltage is incorrect, the oven control board needs to be replaced.

Step 3. Remove the faulty oven control

  1. Turn off the power to the oven or unplug it before proceeding with the replacement.
  2. Remove the four Phillips head screws securing the control board in place.
  3. Hold the old and new control boards side by side.
  4. Transfer the wires from the old control board to the new one, replacing them one at a time to prevent incorrect wiring.

Step 4. Install the new oven control

  1. Secure the new control board by reinstalling the four Phillips head screws.
  2. Double-check all wire connections for accuracy.
  3. Reinstall the back panel by aligning it correctly and securing it with the Phillips head screws.
  4. Restore power to the range by plugging it back in or turning the power back on.
  5. Test the oven to confirm the new control board is functioning properly.
