Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time for any heating parts to cool down before working on it.
  • Take pictures or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting to prevent any problems with reassembly.

Testing process

  1. Open the freezer door and locate the ice bin. Carefully pull the ice bin out.
  2. Empty the contents of the ice bin into a bag or container so you don’t lose any of the ice.
  3. Once the ice bin is empty, inspect the auger inside. The auger is the corkscrew-shaped component that helps drive the ice forward so it can be dispensed.
  4. Examine the auger closely for any signs of damage, such as rust, cracks, bends, or excessive wear. Make sure it is able to rotate freely without any binding or resistance.
  5. If the auger is damaged in any way, it will need to be replaced with a new one.
  6. Once you’ve confirmed the auger is in working order, replace the ice back into the bin.
  7. Slide the ice bin back into the freezer, making sure it is properly seated and aligned.
  8. Test the ice dispenser function to ensure the auger is now working correctly and ice is being properly dispensed.
