The error code information provided in this article may not apply to your specific appliance model. The disassembly information is based on models starting with DV45. While we strive to offer helpful advice for DIY appliance repairs, variations in models and configurations can lead to differences in troubleshooting steps, error codes and part replacements. For the most accurate guidance, we strongly recommend consulting the technical sheet for your specific appliance model.

What the error code means

Error code tE on a Samsung dryer signifies an issue with the thermistor which is responsible for accurately monitoring and regulating the internal temperature. The thermistor functions by sensing the heat levels in the dryer and communicating this information to the control board, so that your clothes are dried effectively and safely. When it malfunctions or short circuits, this can cause inaccurate readings or an inability to read heat temperatures at all.

Exhaust vents obstructed by debris might also lead to issues with temperature regulation inside your appliance causing false readings of heat levels.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time for any heating parts to cool down before working on it.
  • Take pictures or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting to prevent any problems with reassembly.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs to any appliance parts that hold water. Have towels ready for any residual water in the system when removing parts.

Troubleshooting steps

Clean the lint screen and vents

One of the easiest ways to resolve the tE error code on a Samsung dryer is to clean the lint screen and vent system. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Turn off the dryer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Pull out the lint filter and remove any lint buildup by hand or using a soft-bristled brush.
  3. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the area around the filter and remove any debris or dust.
  4. Check for a blocked lint filter or clogged lint screen that may be preventing proper airflow.
  5. Vacuum out any remaining lint or debris from the vent system using a flexible hose attachment.
  6. Reinstall the filter back into its slot, ensuring that it fits snugly in place.

Inspect the thermistor and control board

  1. Unplug the dryer from its electrical outlet.
  2. Locate the thermistor, which is usually located on the blower housing or near the heating element.
  3. Use a multimeter to measure the thermistor resistance. The resistance should be between 10,000 and 12,000 ohms at room temp.
  4. If the resistance is outside of this range, you will need to replace it with a new thermistor.
  5. Check for any loose thermistor wires or board wires
  6. If you find any damaged wires or connections, repair or replace them as necessary.
  7. Inspect the board for any visible signs of damage such as burn marks or loose components.
  8. If you find any signs of damage on the board, it will need to be replaced with a new one.

Inspect the wiring

  1. Disconnect your dryer and switch off the circuit breaker before you begin inspecting any wires.
  2. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the back panel in place and take it off.
  3. Inspect all connectors for damage, loose wire connections, or corrosion. If you find any issues, replace them immediately using manufacturer-approved parts.
  4. Test each wire’s voltage with a multimeter if no problems were found during the visual inspection.
  5. Using a multimeter, check continuity in each wire by measuring resistance (ohms).
  6. Visually inspect the wire harness for fraying or breaks that could be causing connectivity issues. Also, check for any fraying or damage to the power cord.
  7. After ensuring that everything looks good, reconnect all wires and test out your dryer.
