Who Builds Amana Appliances?

It depends on which Amana product you own. Amana major appliances — refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, and dishwashers — are built by Whirlpool Corporation, which acquired the Amana appliance brand through its 2006 purchase of Maytag. But the Amana name on furnaces and air conditioners belongs to Daikin, and Amana commercial microwaves belong to ACP. Same brand name, three separate companies.

That split trips up a lot of parts searches. Before you order anything, you need to know which Amana you have, because the maker (and the parts) are completely different across the three product categories. Here is how the brand fractured and what it means for your repair.

Who makes Amana refrigerators and laundry?

Whirlpool. Today, Amana-branded refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, and dishwashers are Whirlpool products, engineered and built on Whirlpool’s shared appliance platforms. If you own an Amana kitchen or laundry appliance, you own a Whirlpool-family machine wearing an Amana badge.

Amana was founded in 1934 in Amana, Iowa. Raytheon bought Amana Refrigeration in 1965, Goodman acquired it in 1997, and then Maytag purchased the Amana appliance business from Goodman in a deal completed August 1, 2001. Five years later, Whirlpool acquired Maytag in 2006, and Amana major appliances have been Whirlpool products ever since.

Who makes Amana furnaces and air conditioners?

Not Whirlpool. This is the split that surprises people. When Goodman sold the Amana appliance business to Maytag in 2001, it kept the Amana HVAC brand. Goodman itself was then acquired by Daikin in 2012, so Amana-branded furnaces and central air conditioners are Goodman/Daikin products today. Amana packaged terminal air conditioners (the PTAC units common in hotels) are Daikin products as well.

So an Amana furnace has nothing to do with the company that builds your Amana refrigerator. Different engineering, different parts network, different service channel entirely.

Who makes Amana commercial microwaves?

A third company: ACP, Inc. Amana commercial microwaves and high-speed ovens — the heavy-duty units you see in restaurants and convenience stores — are made by ACP, Inc. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, part of the Ali Group. ACP also produces the Menumaster and XpressChef lines. These are not the same as the Amana countertop microwaves sold for home use, which fall under the Whirlpool major-appliance side.

Amana ownership at a glance

Here is the whole picture in one view, because the three-way split is the single most important thing to get right before ordering parts.

Amana product Built by
Refrigerators, laundry, cooking (major appliances) Whirlpool Corporation 2006 (via Maytag)
Furnaces and air conditioners (HVAC) Goodman / Daikin Daikin acquired Goodman in 2012
Commercial microwaves and high-speed ovens ACP, Inc. (Ali Group) Ongoing

What does this mean when I buy Amana parts?

For your Amana refrigerator, washer, dryer, or range, you shop Whirlpool-family parts. Because Amana major appliances ride on Whirlpool platforms, their components frequently carry Whirlpool part numbers and interchange with Maytag, KitchenAid, and Whirlpool units.

The practical rule is to order Amana appliance parts by your model number, and expect a genuine Whirlpool-family part to be the correct fit.

Browse the Amana parts page and cross-check your model number to confirm the exact component. (For an Amana furnace or a commercial Amana microwave, you would go to Daikin/Goodman or ACP channels instead, since those are different companies.)

How do I find the right parts for my Amana appliance?

Start with the model number, not the brand. Because Amana major appliances are Whirlpool-built, the surest path is to read the full model number off the label and match it in the parts catalog, which returns the exact Whirlpool-family components for your unit. The model label sits on the appliance: inside the fresh-food compartment on refrigerators, around the door opening on washers and dryers, and on the frame or a pull-out drawer on ranges. If a listing shows a Whirlpool or Maytag part number on your Amana result, that is normal and correct, not a mismatch, because these brands share hardware. When a part number has been superseded over the years, the catalog points you to the current equivalent, so you always order the version that ships today.

The bottom line

If it is an Amana refrigerator, washer, dryer, or range, Whirlpool built it, and Whirlpool-family parts fit. If it is an Amana furnace or air conditioner, that is a Daikin/Goodman product. If it is an Amana commercial microwave, that is ACP. Identify the category first, then shop the right maker — and for major appliances, order by your model number with confidence.
