If your Bosch, Thermador, or Gaggenau dishwasher door is unexpectedly falling down, it’s probably due to a worn-out or broken door spring and cable kit. Over time, these springs can become stretched out and the cables may break from repeated opening and closing of the door. When this happens, the door will no longer stay up on its own during normal operation. Replacing this kit is a piece of cake with a simple do-it-yourself repair. You’ll have it done in no time! Let’s get started!

Safety first

When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the appliance or parts. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

Disassembly and Removal Steps

  1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the mounting screws that hold the dishwasher to the countertop.
  2. Place a towel and a container under the dishwasher’s water valve to catch any water.
  3. Use a 5/8″ open-ended wrench to disconnect the water supply line.
  4. Use a 5/16″ nut driver to loosen the hose clamp and remove the drain hose from the air gap. Be prepared for some leftover water!
  5. Slowly and carefully pull the dishwasher out from under the counter. Wiggle it side to side if needed. Slightly open the door for a better grip.
  6. Use needle nose pliers to grab the cable attached to the door hinge.
  7. Close the door slightly to free up space, then remove the cable from the hinge and guide.
  8. Locate the spring and rotate it until it releases from the locking tab. Remove it.

Installation and Reassembly Steps

  1. Connect the new cable to the spring by inserting it into the cutout and twisting it to lock in place.
  2. Insert the spring’s mounting plate into the slot on the dishwasher frame. Press it in securely.
  3. Feed the cable through the guide track.
  4. Use needle nose pliers to pull the cable tight.
  5. Hook it onto the hinge arm.
  6. Tap the spring bracket lightly with a hammer to make sure it sits flush.
  7. Follow the same process to replace the spring and cable on the opposite side.
  8. Open and close the door a few times to make sure it’s balanced and doesn’t fall open.
  9. Clean the side of the dishwasher door and stick on the color code label that came with the kit. This helps identify the part if it ever needs to be replaced again.
  10. Make sure the power cable, water line, and drain hose are properly positioned and not kinked.
  11. Slowly slide the dishwasher back into place.
  12. Guide the hoses and cable through the openings as you push it in.
  13. Open the door and screw the dishwasher back into the countertop using your Phillips screwdriver.
  14. Hand-thread the water line back onto the inlet valve and tighten with the 5/8″ wrench.
  15. Reattach the drain hose to the air gap and tighten the clamp using your 5/16″ nut driver.
  16. Make sure everything is tight and there are no leaks.
  17. Power it up and run a short cycle to check that everything’s working and there are no drips.
