Is your peaceful home chaos every time you start the dishwasher? If your once-silent appliance is making unwelcome noise, you’re not alone. Discover the six most common causes of this issue and solve it yourself with our step-by-step guide and embedded how-to video below.
A noisy dishwasher can disrupt an otherwise quiet home every time you need to wash the dishes. There are six common part component failures that tend to cause noise in the dishwasher. Before starting to diagnose your dishwasher, make sure to unplug from the power supply. Once your dishwasher is safe to work with, follow this easy guide and video to determine which of your dishwasher parts may need to be replaced.
Once you have identified the part needed for your dishwasher, search below using your specific dishwasher model number to identify the exact part needed:
1. Circulation Motor
This motor circulates the water throughout the dishwasher and includes a motor on one end and power terminals on the other end. Some models include an impeller while others will not come with that piece included. The motor can be found on the sump on the bottom of the tub. If you hear a loud squeaking noise, that could indicate that the bearings have gone bad and need to be replaced.
2. Drain Pump
This part is responsible for pumping the water out of the dishwasher into the drain hose. The unit consists of a pump body, a small electric motor, and an impeller. It can be found on the bottom of the dishwasher. If you hear noise when the dishwasher is draining, it could be that the motor is going bad or that there is something stuck in the pump body. Remove the drain pump and check for blockages or obvious signs of damage.
If there is damage to the impeller body or the motor is squealing in a way that sounds like the bearings are going bad, the part will have to be replaced.
3. Water Inlet Valve
This is what lets the water into the dishwasher and is usually found down in the front behind the access panel. If there is noise when the dishwasher is filling, this could indicate that the water inlet valve is bad. Make sure that the piece isn’t just loose. If that isn’t the case, listen for the solenoid to be buzzing or making a knocking sound, that will usually indicate that the valve is faulty and needs to be replaced.
4. Pump Seal and Impeller Kit
This is the part that seals the motor where it connects to the pump. The impeller is the part that actually pumps the water. Yours may include seals, drains, and motors, depending on the model. You’ll find the impeller on the bottom of the dishwasher. If the noise is coming from this area, you can check to see if there is debris in the pump or if there is any damage to be found.
Clean out and inspect the impeller and pump seal(s). Replace the parts if there are any signs of damage or wear that are preventing the unit from operating properly.
5. Door Cable Roller
The door cable roller is a unit that is responsible for routing the door cable from the spring to the hinge so that the door can open and close smoothly. They’re usually mounted on the tub. If the noise happens when you open and close the door, it could be that the rollers have broken or been otherwise damaged. Pull the unit out after disconnecting the power and check the rollers at the bottom of the appliance. If they are damaged or worn, they will need to be replaced.
6. Door Hinges
These are what the door rides on when you open and close it. one side mounts to the tub and the other mounts to the door, with one on each side of the tub. Slide the appliance out and locate the hinges on the bottom sides of the tub. If the dishwasher makes squealing or creaking noises when it is opened or closed, it could be the hinges that are bad. Inspect them for visual signs of damage or wear. If yours has a bumper, make sure that this hasn’t fallen off. If it’s squeaking at a pivot point, a little grease may solve the problem, but if there is damage or any signs of breakage, replacing the hinges will be necessary.
