Symptoms and causes

The control panel assembly is the brains of your dishwasher. It houses the touchpad, control board, and display that allows you to select cycles and options. When it stops working properly, your dishwasher can’t run.

Symptoms of a faulty control panel include:

  • The touchpad not responding to presses
  • Display showing error codes
  • Buttons not working
  • Damage to the control panel exterior

Luckily, replacing the entire control panel assembly is a straightforward repair anyone can tackle. The assembly comes pre-assembled with a new touchpad, control board, and display. Swapping out the old one restores your dishwasher.

What you’ll need

Before starting this repair make sure to unplug your dishwasher or turn off the circuit breaker. You’ll need the following tools:

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Towel or pad to lay new control panel on
  • Replacement console assembly (5304496526)

Removing the outer door panel

The first step is to access the inner workings of your dishwasher door.

  1. Open the dishwasher door fully. Locate the two screws at the bottom of each side that hold on the outer door panel.
  2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove these four screws. Save them for later reinstallation.
  3. Once the screws are out, lift up slightly on the outer door panel. It will drop down a bit and detach from the inner door panel.
  4. Pull the outer panel toward you and lift it off the door. Set this panel aside safely.

With the outer panel removed, you now have access to the control panel assembly inside the door.

Removing the control panel assembly

Next, you need to detach the control panel assembly from the dishwasher door:

  1. Open the dishwasher door again. Locate the screws securing the control panel assembly inside the door. There are usually three screws on Frigidaire models.
  2. Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to remove these screws. Place them somewhere safe.
  3. With the screws out, let the dishwasher door close. Allow the control panel to drop down slightly from the door.
  4. Open the door again. The control panel assembly will now detach fully from the inner door panel. Let it hang down out of the way.

Removing the control panel cover

With access to the back of the control panel, you can now remove the protective plastic cover:

  1. Locate the Phillips screws securing the rear cover over the control panel components. Remove these screws using a Phillips screwdriver.
  2. There are also small locking tabs that hold the cover in place. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry and release these tabs.
  3. Once released, carefully lift the cover-up and off the control panel assembly. Make sure to also remove the rubber grommet from the cover.
  4. Set the cover with the grommet aside. You should now see the inner circuit boards and wiring.

Disconnecting wires and cables

Before fully removing the control panel assembly, you need to disconnect several cable connections:

  1. Locate the two individual black and red wires. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry and detach them from the control board.
  2. Find the wiring harness connectors plugged into sockets on the control board. Gently pull them straight up to disconnect them.
  3. Place the control panel assembly on a towel on the counter. Flip it over to access the back.
  4. Disconnect the last two wiring harnesses by pulling them straight upward.

Removing circuit board

With all wires detached, you can now remove the circuit boards from the faulty control panel:

  1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws securing the main control board to the assembly.
  2. Once unscrewed, lift off the main control board and set it aside.
  3. Locate the ribbon cable connecting to the front display board. Carefully unhook it from the cable holders.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently press on the ribbon cable release tab. This allows the cable to detach from the display board socket.
  5. Pull the display board upward to fully detach it. Remove the old control panel assembly.

You are now ready to install the replacement assembly.

Installing the new control panel

Follow these steps to install your new Frigidaire dishwasher control panel assembly:

  1. Remove the protective plastic film covering the new control panel. This keeps it safe during shipping.
  2. Insert the front display board into place. The small notch fits around the alignment post on the assembly.
  3. Rotate the display board downward until it clicks into place.
  4. Feed the ribbon cable through the retention clips. This keeps it tucked neatly away.
  5. Press the ribbon cable firmly into the socket on the back of the display board. Make sure it clicks securely.
  6. Position the main control board over its screw holes and reinsert all screws using a Phillips screwdriver.
  7. Reconnect all wiring harnesses by firmly pressing them into their sockets. Double-check they are seated properly.

Reassembling the dishwasher

You’re now ready to secure the new control panel assembly into your dishwasher:

  1. Carefully lift and position the new control panel assembly back into place on the inner door panel.
  2. Hold it in place while opening the dishwasher door slightly. This allows access to the screw holes.
  3. Insert and tighten the Torx T20 screws to secure the assembly to the door.
  4. Lift the outer door panel into place. The cutouts align with the tabs on the sides of the inner door.
  5. Slightly lift and close the door while holding the outer panel. This secures it in place.
  6. Insert the Phillips screws along the bottom of each side of the outer door panel.
  7. Once fully reassembled, close the dishwasher door.

Testing and reset

With the repair complete:

  1. Plug the power cord back into the outlet. Turn on the breaker if you shut it off.
  2. Run a test cycle to verify normal operation. Press buttons and turn the control knob to check responsiveness.
  3. If the dishwasher keeps beeping, run a reset sequence.
  4. Press HEATED DRY, NORMAL, HEATED DRY, NORMAL
  5. Press START and hold for three seconds
  6. This resets the control panel and ceases beeping

That completes the control panel replacement! This repair brings your Frigidaire or Electrolux dishwasher back to full functionality. The control panel assembly replacement is an easy fix anyone can tackle.
