If you have a Frigidaire or Electrolux refrigerator with an automatic ice maker, you may eventually need to replace the ice crusher blade 241684108. Safety first

Before starting any appliance repair project, it’s crucial to follow some basic safety precautions.

  • Unplug the refrigerator – This prevents any chance of electrocution while you’re working on the ice maker. Locate the plug and disconnect it from the wall outlet.
  • Turn off the water supply – There will be a water line running to the refrigerator to supply the ice maker. Turn off the shut-off valve for this line while you have the ice maker removed.
  • Use caution around sharp edges – The ice crusher blades are made of thin metal and can have sharp edges. Take care when handling them to avoid cuts. Wearing gloves is recommended.

Materials needed

When comes to repairing items around the house, having the right tools is crucial. For this particular repair, you’ll need the following:

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • 1/4″ nut driver
  • New replacement Ice Crusher Blade #2 (241684108)

These tools will make the job much easier and ensure that you have everything you need to successfully complete the repair. So, before you get started, make sure you have these essential tools on hand!

Okay, now that safety is addressed, let’s get started with the repair!

Removing the ice bucket

The first step is to remove the ice bucket from inside the freezer so you can access the ice maker components.

  1. Open the freezer door completely.
  2. Locate the ice bucket inside the freezer. It will be a plastic bin sitting on a set of rails or tracks.
  3. Lift up slightly on the front of the ice bucket to release it from its seating.
  4. Pull the ice bucket straight out, being careful not to spill any remaining ice cubes.
  5. Place the ice bucket on a towel or other protective surface to prevent scratching your countertop.

With the ice bucket removed, you now have clear access to begin disassembling the ice maker.

Taking off the ice maker cover

The outer cover of the ice maker will need to be taken off next. This is held in place with several screws.

  1. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the two screws located on the side of the ice maker housing.
  2. Carefully turn over the ice maker assembly and remove the two screws holding on the bottom cover.
  3. With all four screws removed, slowly separate and lift off the plastic cover.
  4. Set the cover aside in a safe place where it won’t get damaged.

Removing the E-clip

There is a small e-clip that helps hold some of the interior ice maker components in place. We’ll need to remove this clip to proceed.

  1. Stand the ice maker housing upright again so you can access the front.
  2. Locate the e-clip on the front center of the housing.
  3. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the gap in the e-clip.
  4. Gently pry or flex the clip outward until it pops off the shaft.
  5. Set this e-clip aside with the cover you removed earlier.

Taking off the washer

With the e-clip detached, a washer is now accessible that must also be removed.

  1. Carefully turn over the ice maker housing again.
  2. A metal washer should slide off the center shaft.
  3. Remove this washer and set it with your parts.

Removing the crusher cover

Next, we need to remove the cover over the ice crusher mechanism itself. This involves taking out several small screws.

  1. Use a 1/4″ nut driver to remove the two screws holding on the crusher cover. These will be on the underside.
  2. Once the screws are out, you can detach the small bar linking the cover to the freezer door. Unhook it from the door side.
  3. With the bar unhooked, lift off the plastic crusher cover to expose the crusher blades.
  4. Set aside the crusher cover safely with your other parts.

Taking off the auger nut and blades

With the crusher housing open, you can now access and remove the auger nut and blades, including the crusher blade you’ll replace.

  1. Locate the hex nut holding the auger shaft and blades together. You may be able to loosen this by hand. If not, use pliers gently to break it free.
  2. Once loosened, unscrew and remove the nut completely. Set it aside.
  3. The ice crusher blades are stacked on the shaft with plastic spacers separating them. Note the order and orientation of the blades for reassembly later.
  4. Remove the blades/spacers one by one until only the crusher blade remains on the shaft.

Replacing the crusher blade

Now you’re ready to swap out the old crusher blade for a new one.

  1. Take note of which direction the old crusher blade is facing on the shaft. You’ll need to match this with the new blade.
  2. Carefully slide off the old crusher blade from the auger shaft.
  3. Discard the old crusher blade.
  4. Slide the new crusher blade onto the auger shaft in the same orientation as the old one.
  5. Ensure the blade is fully seated on the shaft before continuing reassembly.

Reassembling the ice maker

With the new crusher blade installed, you can reassemble all the ice maker components in reverse order:

  1. Replace any spacers and remaining blades in their original positions on the shaft.
  2. Thread the auger nut back on and tighten it down with pliers if needed.
  3. Reposition the crusher housing cover and replace the small screws.
  4. Reattach the linkage bar to the freezer door.
  5. Put the metal washer back on followed by the e-clip. Push the e-clip on firmly until it clicks into place.
  6. Replace the outer cover and screw in all four screws again.

Reinstalling the ice bucket

The last step is to put the freshly repaired ice maker back into the freezer:

  1. Line up the slots on the ice maker with the rails in the freezer.
  2. Push the ice bucket back into position until it clicks into place.
  3. Close the freezer door and plug the refrigerator power cord back in.
  4. Turn on the water supply line again.
  5. Allow a few hours for the ice maker to begin making ice again. Check for proper operation.
