Tools needed

  • 5/8″ wrench
  • 5/16″ nut driver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 1/4″ nut driver
  • Towel

Safety precautions

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs to any appliance parts that hold water. Have towels ready for any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Don’t test wiring with a multimeter for live voltage if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short circuiting when testing.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.
  • Clear your workspace of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with bare wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check your user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions for your part or appliance.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause injury.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals, dust or cleaning large debris to prevent injury.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time for any heating parts to cool down before working on it.

Replacement steps

Disassembly

  1. Turn off the water at the shut-off valve under the sink. Place a towel under the fill and drain hoses to catch any water that may be remaining in the lines.
  2. Disconnect the fill line connected to the hot water valve. Use a 5/8 inch wrench to loosen the hose and remove it from the valve.
  3. Locate the drain hose and follow it to its connection point, which could be the garbage disposal or air gap.
  4. Use a 5/16 inch nut driver to loosen the clamp securing the drain hose to the connection point. Slide the clamp off and set it aside.
  5. Open the dishwasher door and pull out the lower rack. Lift the rack off and set it aside.
  6. Use a Philips screwdriver to remove the screws on the mounting brackets that hold the dishwasher to the countertop or cabinet.
  7. Lift up on the dishwasher door and carefully pull the dishwasher out of the cabinets. Place a towel on the floor to protect it from scratches and to catch any water that may come out.
  8. Lay the dishwasher on its side.
  9. Once the dishwasher is on its side, you will have access to the drain pump, which is mounted to the sump.
  10. Place a towel beneath the drain pump to catch any excess water.
  11. Disconnect the wires from the drain pump. Make a note or take a picture of the wire color and locations before removing.
  12. Use a 5/16 inch nut driver to loosen the clamp securing the drain hose to the pump. Slide the hose off and set it aside.
  13. Use the nut driver to loosen the clamp that holds the drain pump to the sump.
  14. Use a quarter-inch nut driver to remove the two screws that secure the drain pump to the frame.
  15. Lift the drain pump out of the sump and turn it around. Pull the wires out from between the motor and the mounting point.

Installation

  1. Position the new drain pump into the sump and insert the wires between the opening.
  2. Align the mounting screw holes and use the nut driver to secure the pump to the frame with the screws.
  3. Tighten down the clamp that holds the drain pump to the sump using the 5/16 inch nut driver.
  4. Slide the drain hose onto the pump and tighten the clamp to secure it.
  5. Attach the wires to the new drain pump in the same location as the removed wiring on the old pump.
  6. Lift the dishwasher back to an upright position and remove the towel.
  7. Carefully push the dishwasher back into the cabinet partially with the hoses routed back under the sink.
  8. Reconnect the drain hose to the air gap or disposal and tighten the clamp using a 5/16 inch nut driver.
  9. Connect the fill line to the hot water valve and hand-tighten it. Use a 5/8 inch wrench to securely tighten the connection and prevent leaks.
  10. Open the dishwasher door and use the Philips screwdriver to insert the screws that hold the mounting brackets to the countertop.
  11. Place the lower dish rack back in.
  12. Close the dishwasher door, plug it back in, and turn on the water shut-off valve.
