What does it do?

The temperature sensor is mounted inside the freezer compartment, towards the upper right corner of the rear panel. It monitors the ambient temperature and relays data back to the main control board. If it fails, the fridge won’t know how cold it is inside, leading to cooling issues.

Replacing this sensor requires disassembling some components to access the back of the freezer. But with patience, an average DIYer can perform the repair in under an hour.

Required materials

Here’s what you’ll need to complete this fix:

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Putty knife
  • Replacement temperature sensor (part # 6500JB2002X)

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind: 

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of injury from electric shock.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts, pinching hazards and debris.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access the interior parts.

Prep steps

Start by unplugging the refrigerator or turning off the circuit breaker. Then let’s go through the process step-by-step. We need to remove some freezer components:

  1. Open both fridge and freezer doors to expose the interiors.
  2. Take out the freezer drawer by pulling it out, lifting up slightly, and sliding it all the way out.
  3. Lift out the freezer basket by pushing up on the sides to unclip it.
  4. Remove the side rail covers on both sides. Press the release tabs and detach.

Now we can detach the freezer door itself:

  1. Lift the door up and off the metal glide rails. No need to remove any screws.
  2. Push the detached rails back into the freezer compartment and out of the way.

Removing the freezer door

With the door removed, we need to unscrew the rails to detach them fully:

  1. Take out the two Phillips screws securing the upper right rail and remove it.
  2. Remove the three screws from the lower right rail and detach it.
  3. On the left side, remove the two screws from the upper rail and take it off.
  4. Take out the three screws on the lower left rail. Disconnect the wire harness before fully removing it.

Accessing the sensor

With the rails detached, we can now access the rear panel and temperature sensor:

  1. Use a putty knife to pry off the duct cover on the back panel. Release the locking tabs.
  2. Insert the putty knife into the side seam of the rear access panel. Slowly pry it outward.
  3. Once released, pull off the panel fully. Disconnect the wire harness plugs.
  4. Carefully position the panel out of the way without straining the wiring.

Replacing the sensor

  1. Locate and detach the old sensor from the plastic housing. Unplug it from the wire terminals.
  2. Insert the new temperature sensor into the holder properly and plug it into the harness.
  3. Route the wiring through the slit in the insulation panel. Make sure it’s positioned correctly.

Reinstalling the evaporator cover

  1. First, reconnect the wire harness plugs into the evaporator cover panel.
  2. Position the panel back into place, pressing firmly to re-seat the locking tabs.
  3. Replace the duct cover, lining it up and snapping the tabs back into place.

Reattaching the rails and freezer door

  1. Insert the bottom left rail first, plugging in the harness. Secure with three screws.
  2. Attach the top left rail with two screws.
  3. Similarly, reinstall the top and bottom right rails using the screws.
  4. With the rails in place, put the freezer door back on. Ensure the hinges are set properly.

Finishing touches

  1. Replace the detached side rail covers by aligning and snapping them back on.
  2. Put the freezer basket back into place by lowering it on both sides.
  3. Insert the freezer drawer, angling it to align the glides.
  4. Close up the fridge and freezer doors.
  5. Restore power and allow 15 minutes for the temperature to regulate before adding food.

With the new temperature sensor installed, your LG or Kenmore refrigerator should maintain proper cooling temperatures.
